Prednisolne side effects - chest and back pain

I have UC and I've been using prednisolone on and off over the last year or so but the most recent course im on has been giving me the most agonising back and chest pains, last night i could not sleep due to the pain. From other forums i've read online people generally get the pain after they've stopped taking them but i was on my 3rd week (taking 6 5mg) and i had to stop taking them two days ago as the pain was just too much. I work as a chef and am the only one in the kitchen so and when the pain starts i really struggle to do the work when the pain starts. Has anyone else experienced this? I have a hospital appointment in a couple of weeks where im going to tell my doc i no longer wish to take pred but so far its the only kind of meds that have had any significant effect on my condition.

Welcome to this forum. I am sure we will be able to provide you with necessary information and assistance on this forum as and when you need it the most.
In so far as your concern about back and chest pain is concerned, I suppose the same may be for some other reasons. Generally these are withdrawal symptoms of pred once you stop or are tapering it down. I have been on pred for years and never experienced this kind of problem. In any case pred has to be taken under strict medical supervision because of its side effects.
Have you considered any alternate remedy/natural products for UC. There are lots of them and many people have gone into remissions by taking such natural remedies. Please do not stop the pred abruptly as it may be dangerous.
Please speak to your doctor.

I have Crohns and I am on pred as well
I have had the most painful feeling in chest and back as well

My doc said it could be due to having to lay down as much as I have been ( fibro as well )
BUT that is me and I am sure other's will have some sage advice for you
I just wanted you to know you are not alone and you have found a great place for support caring and empathy

Hi guys and thanks for your replys. As far as other/herbal remedies are concerned i haven't tried any though i have thought about it, any suggestions for me, im what you could call a noob to this sort of thing. As i said i stopped the pred 2 days ago and im in so much pain right now its almost as depressing as when im having a flare up and unable to work or go to the shops or do anything really, im at work at the moment and its finally quietened down enough for me to check this, but the last few days at work have been a real struggle due to the pain

Please check the posting on Turmeric - how it is absorbed sent a short while ago. You will get lot of information on alternate and natural cure.

You should not just stop taking prednisone, that may be making all these pains worse. Is your back pain muscular or what, can you tell? I always worry it's my kidneys, that's where the pain is but my kidneys always test OK. I get chest pain from stiffness in my rib cage, have you tried any arthritis meds? I admit I take Aleve for my back pain, which does get worse sometimes when I'm flaring. Anyway, Aleve is not the best idea, not good for UC, so I hope you can reach your doctor for some guidance.
Sorry you are suffering with these symptoms in addition to the UC, while trying to work! Ugh.

Yeah the pain goes right across the front of my rib cage and all up my back. As for tumeric im going to look into getting some fresh and eventually start growing, good for me that i like the taste! Thanks again for all your help and advice everyone

I was given Voltaren for the rib cage pain, it worked really well. I was told it was a temporary arthritis, symptom of the UC. Let us know if the tumeric works for you, too.

Well i started taking the pred again after being off it two days, i thought it would prob best to listen to you guys as you's seem to be pretty knowledgable on the whole subject. Have been taking over the counter pain killers for the chest and back pains and they seem to be doing the trick though i ain't taken any since yesterday and im still on the pred, and no pain! As for the Tumeric i've had it in my dinner the last two nights but would really know if it works until im finished the meds. Anyone needing some ideas about cooking with Tumeric i can actually be of some help there so just ask! After all you lot have been pretty helpful to me since i joined this site 3 days ago!
