What causes the pain?!

My consultant told me that there are no nerves on the inside of the intestinal wall so what causes the pain we get pain during bowel movements or otherwise?!

That's a good question! I don't really know the answer to that but I think that it has to do with the contractions that the intestine goes thru to get rid of waste. With a sore and ulcerated colon how can that possibly NOT hurt??? I know some on here don't have any pain - just wish I was as lucky!

Digested foods passing through an ulcerated and/or inflamed colon are going to cause pain. Think about if you had a bad scrape on your hand and the injured area was sore, swollen and inflamed. Any time you touched it or banged it up against something it would hurt, right?

In addition, gut pain can also be caused by gas and spasming of the colon.

I'm one of the lucky ones w/o pain. I have no idea why I don't when so many people have such severe pain. It just doesn't make sense.

Ugh, it's a blinding pain, sometimes I think I'll black out. Whatever it is, something very bad must be happening in there! Then it's gone but it wipes me out. I'll see what my doc says it is.

If I can remember, I will ask my GI too on Tuesday. I am going in for a c-scope (agh!) and if I am in the right frame of mind, maybe I will remember to ask him.

The only pain I've ever really had with my crohn's colitis is lower back pain, it got bad enough a times that with each bowel movement I'd be sitting on the pot balling my head off cuz it hurt so bad, I do have pain with my perianal crohn's skin tags (luckily you won't know what that's like).

Makes sense that its like having a scrape and then knocking it or scraping it again! And it is weird that some of us get pain and others don't....I wonder why that is. What a strange disease!!

I had no idea some people didn't feel the pain. I always assumed it was the inflamation and ulcers causing the pain. For me the pain is so bad it makes me nauseous. It is crazy cause when the nausea gets bad enough that I am going to vomit I don't know which end to stick on the toilet. PANIC! shocked smhair

It's because the colon is distended. The colon wall doesn't sense actual pain, the general area has pressure receptors, which your brain processes similarly to pain.

It's why, if you've ever had a flex sig done without anethesia, them pumping you full of air produces discomfort. Same with gas.
