Acne - Medications

Please try head and shoulders regular formula and report back.

We have used many types of medicines to relieve acne for my daughter. The hair shampoo, Nioxin, has been helpful, as has the prescription body wash, Rosula, which is Sodium Sulfacetamide, 10%.This is a prescription, as is the Evoclin foam topical and the Differin, Tazorac and laser peels she has tried. This is a nasty disease for those predisposed for acne. The Evoclin foam has an antibiotic, so be careful with it. We think that the initial exposure, over 3 months -to an antibiotic for her face, may have set off the first UC flare. Once this disease is set in motion, it might not matter how is was set off. Treatment is the same, but we wonder if that was the "environmental" turn-on of the genes responsible. Still don't have the acne under control and the Pred was ruinous. Good luck, everyone is different.

Have you thought of Neem Soap and Betadine based shampoo. I tried Head & Shoulder too. Normally my problem used to aggravate whenever I was in need of a haircut. Neem soap is really helpful and has cured me of such acne on my whole body.

I hope this message of mine is not taken to be marketing, which is forbidden as per forum rules. My advice to you is to please consult your dermatologist before using Betadine Shampoo. In so far as Neem Soap is concerned, there should be no problem in using that. The cautions are mentioned herein, as also the brand name and price. You may search them online. You may also look for Turmeric Cream, if you so wish to use it for face.

How does it work?

Povidone iodine belongs to a class of antiseptics known as iodophores. These chemicals exert their antiseptic effect by slowly releasing iodine. Antiseptics (sometimes called germicides) are chemicals that kill or prevent the growth of micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and bacterial spores. Povidone iodine shampoo is used for the treatment of seborrhoeic conditions of the scalp associated with excessive dandruff, pruritus, scaling, exudation and erythema of the scalp, pityriasis capitis. infected lesions of the scalp (including recurrent furunculosis, infective folliculitis and impetigo). The activity is maintained in the presence of exfoliative debris and infected scalp lesions whilst the colour persists. It does not stain the skin.

A dermatologist prescribed me some sort of steroid liquid to put on my scalp. I haven't tried it since I want avoid the whole steroid thing. I've read that you can use acne astringent cleaners on your scalp as long as it only contains salicylic acid (and NOT benzyl peroxide--it can change your hair color).

Zinc tablets work great for acne. Most IBD sufferers are zinc deficient.

Take 200 mg of Zinc for the 1st week and thereafter 100 mg of zinc per day and within 2 weeks acne should be a thing of the past

I had acne for many years. I tried all kinds of meds. I finally got rid of it with Zinc supplements and multi vitamins.

I wish I had known earlier about Zinc supplements as suggested by our friends Mudua and Hobo. I used to have lots of acne in my younger days. How to turn back the clock. But I am going to suggest this Zinc to my nephew, who is a chronic acne guy. Thanks

Hey Everyone,


I am on day 7 of taking 200mg of Zinc. It definitely has made a difference with my skin and the plugs. It has decreased by at least 50%.

By the third day, it seemed like it was 90% gone, but within the last few days it's come back alittle bit, but it's still better.

So, after today, I'm suppose to go down to 100mg, right? Or can I stay at 200mg or even go higher? I feel like I may need more. It's strange, but not only does my skin look and feel better, but I feel better and I had eye problems for awhile, and that has gotten much better.....
