I have just been diagnosed with Pancolitis.  I have been on pain medications and other medications for years for a failed back surgery; in which my neck failed to fuse.  Does anyone know of medicatios that can cause pancolitis.  I'm trying to change my food and meds so I won't cause my colon to be mad at me.  Any help and advice is appreciated.  This is a terrible disease to live with.  I have been deathy sick since June of last year.  Thanks

Hi Lena Grace and welcome. The only drug I know of that causes colitis is Accutane (an acne med). I took it many years ago and was dx'd with pancolitis in 2007...the good news is with proper treatment it can be controlled and quite well in many cases...I also have cervical and lumbar spine issues...hang in there, it will get better.

I often wonder if me taking Advil like candy for many years had something to do with my UC.

Advil shouldn't cause it but will irritate.
But I agree, accutane caused mine!
Did you take lots of antibiotics?

And don't dwell on the cause, try to find peace and get healed.

wow! that is a complete shock to me, I didn't know specific things caused UC -pancolitis.

I will definitely be telling everyone i know on accutane to stay far far away!! Did a doctor tell you that accutane could have caused it - or is this self deduced?

Are there any other things that can cause our disease?

for reference, before i had UC-pancolitis, i never took lots medications - advil, antibiotics, any accutane whatsoever.

There is a huge amount of litigation regarding Accutane causing UC. I haven't paid attention lately, but I know at least two cases have been fully litigated and ended up with judgements for something like $6 million. Eventually the drug company will probably settle these cases. I do not have a good case because my medical records were destroyed long ago and I can't prove I took it (in 1983).

If you google the two conditions you'll find the lawyers who are managing this litigation.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned it, and since you're new to UC you may not know - antibiotics can bring on UC.  Obviously, that's not a pain medication, but you asked about others, too.  Just thought I'd mention it.  I'm sorry to hear you've been suffering for so long.  I hope you find some treatment that works for you!
