Is my case unusual?

when i flare, and have only had a few....diagnosed with uc about a yr ago....symptoms since i was a teen.  When i flare, i can take pred 40 mg and withing 2-3 days, i am better and can get right off the stuff without recurrence...is that typical....sounds like others have a harder time reaching remission.  but i think i am only in remission for about 4 or 5 months.

No, not unusual at all, often at 40mg pred can kick in very quickly and bring relief, usually though as you taper symptoms come back so you're very lucky that doesn't happen to you, hopefully you're a milder case and that's why your pattern is the way it is.  You should never just stop taking pred though it's not safe to do becausse it affects your adrenal glands...Remember every IBD is basically unique, there really are no 2 the exact same.

I am not a doctor but today my doctor (who speaks in a heavy dutch accent that I can barely understand sometimes) said, I'm pretty sure this is what he said, if you take the prednisone and everything goes away and you go off of it it is a sign of infectious colitis. I don't know if I heard him right but I could have sworn that is what he said, might be something you want to ask your doc or if anyone here knows any more information.
