colonoscopy results

I had my colonoscopy a few hours ago and the results are different then what I thought.   I had my first colonoscopy in oct 07 and was told crohn's. Then I switched drs after not feeling confident in the one I was going to. That doctor that it was more of an ulcerative colitis. After giving me medications for 7 weeks and they were clearing up any symptoms he decided i needed another colonoscopy. So I had one today and the diagnosis is Severe Ulcerative Proctitus. The findings said:

Segmental severe inflammation characterized by congestion (edema), erythema, friability, granularity, and shallow ulcerations.

So my question to you all is ulcerative proctitis the same thing as ulcerative colitis??

When he came to talk to me after the procedure I wasn't very with it at all....so hes supposed to call me tommorrow and talk to me about what he saw and everything. My mom was my driver and she said that he said we needed to get this under control fast because it was such severe inflammation.

did anyone else have this at all??

UC and UP differ only in the location. Proctitis is in the rectum only. Colitis is in part or all of the colon. Proctitis can become colitis in some people, as flares always start in the rectum - it's the first to get inflamed and the last to heal.

For a diagnosis of proctitis, you definitely should be on rectal medication; if it isn't clearing up you may want to ask your doctor about Rowasa enemas as they may be more effective in some than Canasa.

Proctitis can also be from crohn's when crohn's is active in the rectom...crohn's can also affect the colon (crohn's colitis).

I had to take pred to finally get the bad flares under control. I was on pred June-Sept 08 and it did stop a really long and bad flare. I am now on Lialda 3-4 pills a day and Canasa at night. I have had two smaller flares since Sept. but neither one was anything like the other two long flares I had prior to the pred. treatment. I think that for me the Lialda and Canasa are working to control the disease for the most part but neither one got me out of the more serious flares. I really feel very good most days and see no sideffects of the medication. If you are not in major flare right now you might ask your doctor about Lialda. You only have to take it once a day...
