Confused about colonoscopy results

I had my colonoscopy yesterday and don't remember much. My husband said that the Dr said there were some signs of inflammation and I had a very large polyp that he removed and he also did 6 biopsies. But he never mentioned IBD at all.

However, I am not to see the Dr until June 24 for followup and pathology results. Since he didn't mention UC or CD does this mean I don't have it, and if I don't have IBD what is causing the symptoms I am having? Been through food intolerance tests, blood tests, and fecal occult (positive) with my Primary Dr. who was sure it was UC. Now I am confused as the GI didn't even mention this (according to mu husband). My husband also said that he said everything looked fine, which is contradictory to finding a large polyp and inflammation. I wish I were conscious when the Dr spoke to my husband because I am so confused and my husband has not been "on board" with my health problems this whole time and thinks I am just being a baby and should deal with not feeling well and do everything anyway despite me feeling bad.

I have been diagnosed IBS for 17 years and never had any of these symptoms, so I am pretty sure that it is something more, especially since I am way less stressed now than I have been before in my life. I am also losing weight (10 pounds in the past month) and there is a lot of blood and mucous, cramps, urgency, and other symptoms I never had before with the IBS.

I guess I am just really confused as to what diagnosis and why I have to wait 3 weeks with no medication except an antispasmodic which as of now seems to do nothing for my symptoms. I just want to crawl into bed and cry. 14 months of feeling bad with 6 months of the IBD symptoms full blown with hardly any relief. I guess I was expecting a miracle diagnosis and everything would be semi-normal again once I got on meds.

Definitely ask for the test results in writing.  My gastro doc always gives me them in writing day of scope and talks to my husband and I after I am fully awake.  I wait there until then.  Good luck and surely sounds like UC to me to something more than IBS.  I also have had IBS about 30 years and UC is definitely more - like you say - blood, mucous, pain, urgency, etc.

     Jenn, I would definitely be PO'd at that GI doctor too.  My GI doctor ALWAYS waits till I am fully awake and alert after my colonoscopy and then brings me and my husband into a room where he explains the results to BOTH of us.  He then asks us if WE have any questions which he is more than happy to try to explain.  I think you need a new GI doctor.

I am definitely calling the office on Monday. I am also having a lot of pain which I was told I should not have any pain or discomfort besides gas, but this is a sharp stabbing pain in my left side and feels at times like it is spasming and throbbing, not at all like gas pains. I have passed gas several times yesterday and today and have had two bowel movements, and the pain has not changed in any way. I am walking with a limp also because of the pain.

My husband has no sympathy/empathy. He says he specifically asked the Dr if I would have any issues such as pain afterward and the Dr said "no, I shouldn't" so he is convinced I am faking.

I am so upset and feel so unsupported right now I don't even know what to do. I woke up so sick yesterday with headache and severe nausea from the anestesia and asked him to call the hospital and he refused, so in tears, I called them and asked what I should do. They said to go back to sleep and take some Tylenol for the headache. Well I did that but woke up again later still feeling ill. I feel ok today, just a slight headache and no nausea and the abdominal pain.

My husband doesn't usually act this way so I am confused as to why he suddenly developed this I don't care attitude. He thinks I am not sick,and I am faking. I understand faking the things you can't see, but how can I fake things that you can see (like blood in the stool) for over 14 months?

Maybe I am just down and depressed, but I am usually not a depressed person, although this is taking its toll on me especially since the husband has decided to not care anymore.

The day of my colonoscopy I left with a 2 page report of the findings and pictures. My GI also came and spoke to both my husband and I once I had recovered a bit.

     Hope you are feeling better Jenn.  Sorry to hear your husband isn't sympathetic with your condition.  My hubby used to be that way until the doctor had a talk with him about my condition early on, about a year or two after I was diagnosed.  When first diagnosed I was hospitalized for eight days and nearly died undergoing the colonoscopy because I am allergic to Demerol (horrible way to find out I was allergic to it..lol).  This took place in the hospital the day before I was SUPPOSED to come home.  Needless to say, I had to spend another few days in there.  My hubby was working at the time.  But he did make a complete turnaround when it sunk in just how serious IBD could be.  Now he can't do enough for me.  Sometimes I even wish he would just leave me alone !  He's been retired for nine years.

     My oldest daughter isn't sympathetic either....to anyone!  She went through a bad divorce six years ago and I think it hardened her.  But then she never had much consideration for those who were sick.  On the other hand, my youngest daughter, who still lives at home (we are having an addition put on for her) is extremely considerate.  So, lucky for me the youngest is home and not the oldest huh?

I hope you can focus on yourself, get rest and take your meds (what are they?). The polyp is gone, that's good! The report of inflammation was not a surprise, I suppose. Sounds like the scope irritated things, that is also not unusual. You'll just have to be extra gentle to you gut for a while! I know you want information, but would you do anything differently if you had been told, yes, you have IBD or UC?

Please try to relax, do whatever you need to take care of yourself and don't dwell on your husband and his reaction to things. Give yourself peace.

I would possibly check out another GI, and have your husband and yourself meet with him with your recent colonoscopy results, or do the same with your current GI.... It is much easier with a supporting spouse. If my wife was unsupportive and thought I was faking, it would be very difficult...it makes it harder to feel relaxed, etc...
