   Hi, i'm new here but not to uc have had it for 20 years  cry  . It has been a long road for me the last 4 years have been awful. But the last 3 months i have seen a big turn a round.  I'm doing so much better. yeah I having been reading on here for a while now and well thought it was about to time i said hi !!   So hi everyone

Hi!  I am one of the seniors here - diagnosed when 67 years old.  What do you attribute your turn around to?

  Well my dr put me on Lialda as my last resort . Well it helped alot  but i was still having lot of trouble so i started looking at my dite and and well i cut out sugars and that was when i really started to feel better. Im still going 3 to 6 times a day but its much better . And the pain is almost gone . I was living in so much pain my stomach hurt all the time.

Glad you said that about sugar.  I am going to a specialist in a couple weeks who seems to agree with you about sugar and diet helping.  I am anxious to find out because I am a sugar addict and trying so hard to cut back.

  O i was too now the only sugar i get is from fruit  and veggies and i feel so much better . I have been six weeks with no sugar and i don't miss it at all . Give it a try and just see how you feel.

Welcome! Why do you say that Lialda is a "last resort?" It's viewed as a first-line med in UC treatment and as a 5-ASA drug, is one of the safest to use long-term. Usually, drugs like Remicade are viewed as the last resort.

Yes, I wish I could tolerate the mesalamines as they are the safest and best in the long run if they work for you and you can take them. 

Question about sugar - I can't eat raw fruit or veggies - what are your suggestions - canned?  They have to be well cooked! Also, do you use any artificial sweeteners.  I just started Stevia and does not seem to bother me - only use it in tea and coffee.

   I was on Remicade and could not tolarate it i have been on dipentum,ascol, and could not tolarate them and i'm

alergic to sulful med .  So can't take them .Over the years i have taken so much pred. that it made my sugar go up so thats now out also. So My gi said i had nothing to try but lialda. and thank the lord so far so good.

umm I eat the canned fruit and veggies i just make sure its no sugar added . and i do fine with fresh fruits and veggies also and i only drink water always have . So i don't use sweeteners sorry .

Your doctor should consider for you to use rectal meds.

It's great you're feeling/doing much better!

I was diagnosed 20 years as well....hoping to maintain the status quo for a while yet.

ya know thats the one thing he has not tried . I go to see him in a few weeks and im going to ask about that. . cause let me tell you im not going to let this us win ! I do not want to have my colon removed !!! I have made my mind up i will try most anything chang my dite , Im even trying yoga for stress lol
