So, I've been in remission for a about 2 years, had a minor flare May of last year and got over it by myself by the end of June. Well, this year I thought I beat the yearly flare. Well..... I didn't. sad For the past 2 weeks, it's been sneaking up on me. I've been noticing blood in the morning when I go potty. This week it has gotten worse. sad I did message my doctor and it sounds like he wants me on Canasa suppositories. I'm trying to avoid that and go on prednisone instead. Hopefully he would give me that.

Just frustrated at getting another minor flare. sad

Why would you prefer pred instead of Canasa (or Rowasa)? I mean, I'd much rather give the Canasa a chance to work before jumping to pred. Or maybe why not Cortifoam?

I just want oral medication, but if my doc says that it's better to take canasa, I will take it, but I'd just rather take medication orally. What is Cortifoam?

I can see that you prefer oral meds, but canasa/rowasa don't have nearly as bad potential side effects as prednisone does. Cortifoam is a steroid foam enema. I thought maybe you preferred pred because steroids work better than ASA meds for you.

Personally, I didn't use pred until it was obvious that I wasn't going to get out of the flare by using oral and rectal 5ASA's alone. And I was really, really sick.

As I recall the last time you were on pred....your emotions were literally to hell and back...why would you want to go there again?

Do the Canasa...actually, he should have prescribed the retention enemas.

The Canasa can be done twice daily. You should also be on an oral 5ASA such as Asacol.

Are you having diarrhea as well?

Hope you'll get this dealt with soon.

Pretty much all of us flare....it's how we deal with it that's the key. Nice to learn what works for a life-time's worth of dealing with them.

Eventually you'll learn that pred isn't the easy route....many want easy...not necessarily possible with something that starts pretty much at the arsehole.

Quincy, I think you are mixing me up with someone else I haven't had a problem with prednisone. Asacol and me don't mix, it actually makes me go completely backwards, so I can't take Asacol. I'm formed completely, but I have found blood in the toilet.

Can you not use Canasa? have you ever used it in the past?

You are on the big-gun med Humira...I think dealing with it rectally is the way to go.

At least try it initially...then you at least have another option.

You could also start probiotics and fibre supplements....

I have never tried canasa, I just....I guess I'm feel like pills are my comfort zone. Maybe I should, right now, I'm just waiting for a response from my doc. I messaged him already, just waiting....

Now I feel stupid, from what I studied on the medication of Canasa I now understand it more. My mom this morning got me confused. I thought Canasa was a type of steroid. So, I've decided to try the Canasa. Hopefully it will work.

Mildly off-topic: I thought Humira was for osteoperosis or something random. I don't know, I hear the name on tv. It's for colitis? I'm out of the loop on a lot of the meds you guys discuss, especially the enemas. Which I am uncomfortable with trying.

Humira is for autoimmune diseases. In the U.S. it's not approved for Colitis yet as far as I know.

If you look on the website www.humira.com. It explains that it's for many diseases. Right now it's approved for Crohn's but not UC. It's also approved for people with UC who stopped responding to Remicade. That's how I got on to Humira.

ElephantPipe, go to the ccfa.org website for a lot of good info about the different meds used to treat UC and Crohn's. It's got a lot of good, basic info, and you can do more searching from there.

As to Humira, I dind't think it was approved for UC, even for people who have failed Remicade. I thought that insurance companies would generally agree to cover it, but that it was still a crapshoot as to whether or not they would.

Sorry to hear about your flare.

I understand how you feel about the preference for oral meds.  I really hate anything related to the butt--thinking about it, let alone inserting things into it.  This is a horrible disease for someone with that kind of aversion to get.  But steroids scare the crap out of me (pun unintentional and therefore nonsensical), so I'm trying the suppositories.

They're not so bad, it's just weird.  about 5-15 minutes going in, it feels like my butt is "swallowing" it and that's really uncomfortable, but the enema I got at the hospital was MUCH worse.  And when I remember to do them everyday, I do feel better.  I think I'm actually getting close to a remission.

Give them a shot.

Well, I tried the Canasa, and it's giving me diarreha. So, I'm guessing it's a no go. :( Oh well. At least I tried it.
