     Did your GI doctor give you a hard time when you asked for a script for Bentyl?  I believe I really need an antispasmotic medication.  He gave me a script for xanax a few months ago with a lecture that he doesn't want me addicted to it.   The bottle contains 40 0.5 mgm pills with NO refills printed on it.  As a kid I know I had spasms of the stomach and a chiropractor actually helped me tremendously without any meds.  I would love to go to a chiropractor now but I have full blown osteoporosis and am afraid he will break a bone..lol.

Christine, I'm not Quincy (obviously lol) but I had no trouble getting my GI to prescribe me Bentyl. In fact, he is the one that brought it up after I asked him about the cramping I have been getting. I don't take it everyday but it really does help me with my cramping. It makes me a bit tired though.

Hi Christine,

I'm not Quincy either but my GI had no problem prescribing it for me either, but I did notice it said 0 Refills. I do find it does help me, when I remember to take it.

Hi Christine...my doc prescribed it 20 years ago. I would think the first prescription may not have any refills in case it doesn't help, but I have refill requests with no problems.

If I would use more than the prescribed amount, the pharmacy would probably not refill it unless a call went in to have the prescription changed. Seems the computer counts every little pill, etc. (just a personal rant regarding how the pharmacy I go to measures stuff)..lol.

You should request the lowest dose pill amount and ask the doc what's the most you can use it daily...that way, he'll at least give you a good amount, even if you don't need it to that extent. Better than the doc not giving you enough and you using too many..etc. The lowest dosage pill amount is 10 mg....and I believe it can be prescribed up to 4x daily....

It works well, and yes...it can leave you feeling mildly tired if you aren't busy....you can take it maybe half an hour before you eat to help cramping, etc.

Hi Christine!

My Doctor was also very happy to prescribe Bentyl to me when I needed it.. I even told him that Quncy here was the one who suggested I take it when I asked her what drug to try for cramps and nausea.... He was like... "Of course!! What a great drug~ Here's a Scrip!" It does help me when I really need it, but I also noticed that Xanax can have a very calming effect on my intestines too... Sometimes more so than the Bentyl.. but I don't like taking the Xanax unless I am REEEEEAAALLLY Stressing out and cramping... Normally the Bentyl helps me just fine. I think he'd rather prescribe bentyl than xanax anyways :) Good luck!!

The 10mg capsules can be prescribed every 4-6 hours. That is what my prescription is for and my doc even gave me 2 refills. So that would be 100 pills with 2 refills.

  My doctor prescribes massive amounts of Bentyl. She claims its one of the safest medicines out there and side effects are so limited. The majority of my UC sumptoms is extremely painful cramping. Bentyl definitely helps with the more mild cramping - just not the extreme cases. I really dont understand why a doc would have a problem prescribing it.

     Thank you all for the replies.  My trouble isn't cramping.  My problems are in the rectum.  Just that last bit before the poo comes out.  I can feel the discomfort all the time.  My doctor said it is the hardest to treat, very stubborn.  You think the Bentyl would help that ?

Hi Christine...it won't treat the inflammation, but it could give you some relief regarding the constant feeling from it.
