My family and I just had to put our 12 and half year old Sheltie to sleep today. My mom was home watching tv and Sydney started to shake and she went limp. We brought her to the vet and they said it was most likely that she had a stroke. She was in horrible condition and we couldn't stand to see her like that so we made the decision.
I know its a part of life and she's in a better place now. We're pretty sad though. I thought this would be the best place to look for some encouragement...

cry  Been there more than once.  Sorry you lost one of your best friends - we always know they won't live forever but sad when they go.  I had a cat who was 17 who had a stroke.  Your doggie is at peace now!

Awww, that stinks. I'm sorry- we've had shelties forever- we did have 2, one had to be put down & the other got hit by a car shortly after & also had to be put down. It was horrible. Our current sheltie dog is doing well. I'm truly sorry- losing a pet is just awful.

     "hugs".  Our daughter had a Sheltie...best dog EVER!!!  However at the age of 2 she was diagnosed with Lyme disease.  Even with the medication she went downhill.  I suppose Lyme Disease attacks the organs.  She also died of a stroke a few years ago and she was only eight years old.  Now my daughter has a Yorkie and Poodle..what a pair those two are!

O i'm so sorry i know just how you feel our dog Percy who was just like one of our kids died on sunday. she was sixteen years old . we are so sad . sending you and your family a big hug !!!!

Shelties really are the best. I've never met a sweeter dog. It's a crappy ordeal. We now have to focus on our 5 year old, Jack. He was pretty codependent on Sydney and with me going back to school in a month, we're a little worried.

Thanks for the loves guys. I really need it. I might call into work tomorrow...

How sad for you Sam and TLB37...I can truly understand your loss and grief. It's a difficult thing to go through no matter how straight forward the reason or how old the pet.

We risk to have a pet for we know they will not live as long as we....but to look back at the happiness and joy (and sometimes frustration) that they can give is so worth that risk rather than the grief inflicted on final day of their lives.

I don't look forward to the day our cat declines where a decision may have to be made, for even though it's been 15 years...it's like yesterday we got her. She's been a total pain in the butt many times, however she's been the most interactive of any pet we've ever had.

I hope each day gets easier for you both.

I feel you, and I'm sorry to hear that. We just had to put our cat down even though he was only about 4; he had a megacolon =( *hug!*

Pets are part of our family so it's always tragic when we lose one of our pets. I was with my terrier mix (Missy) when we put her down and that was the MOST horrible thing I have ever witnessed and both me and my hubby cried like babies. I'm so sorry to hear that you've lost your sheltie. (((Hugs Sam)))

I'm so sorry Sam...losing a pet is not easy. They become such a part of the family; my two dogs are my "kids." Take care and "hugs" to you.

It's very sad to lose a beloved pet. Just tell yourself that Sydney lived a good long life in terms of dog yrs. A good friend of mine had to put her 20-yr-old tomcat down because his kidneys were failing. He had 1 course of cat-dialysis (IV-flushing at the time), but as soon as vet took him off it he resumed vomiting blood. That was incredibly sad as he still enjoyed routine activities like watching birds in a tree outside the dining room window, and padding to the kitchen whenever the frig door was opened! We have our memories & snapshots-- c'est la vie! Take care. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

Oh how sad! We lost our sweet little bunny this year after 12 good years and I was just heartbroken. Having to take them to the vet and then leave without them is definitely one of the hardest and saddest things to do. I'm thinking of you Sam and TLB!

That is definitely the downside of having those wonderful sources of love in our lives... It wouldn't stop me but I do get so attached and you just know you will have to one day say goodbye.

I'm a little better today. My brother brought over my 7 month old niece to cheer her auntie and gramma up. That helped. She's absolutely gorgeous so you can't helped but smile.
Even though this is hard, it's all worth it. I was 8 when we got Syd and she's been my best friend ever since. Knowing she had a good life is worth it all.

Sam, So Sorry and sending big HUGS your way. I have lost many a pet and it feels like a member of the family each time it happens.
