Asacol and headaches

Hey all,

So I've been taking Asacol since march of 08 and never really seemed to have any side effects at all. I recently just upped my dosage a bit but not to an amount I haven't done before. But lately, I've been waking up in the middle of night with mild to terrible headaches. My head is still killing me right now! It might be just a coincidence that I'm getting these headaches just as I upped the dosage but I thought see if anyone else has had an experience like this while on Asacol?

Seems like something else is going on, if you've been on that amount before with no problems. Are you sleeping in a funny position that might cause neck pain and thus the headache? Or are you perhaps having some sinus issues? I know that when I'm stuffy I often wake up with headaches...I guess it's because the gunk kind of pools in my sinuses or something. If it doesn't get better soon, schedule and appointment with your general doctor.

I began my journey with Asacol and had headaches that started a while after. I moved on to Lialda and it got better for a bit, but the headaches returned with a vengeance. I was taking 4.8 g of Lialda for a while, and that absolutely killed my head. I have since backed off to half that dose (since I take Imuran), and I'm better but I still get headaches. I think they might be from low iron right now, but I don't need any other factors.

As I've often ignored before and now I regret it...if something prevents you from sleeping, get it checked out. That's really no fun.

Come to think of it Fruitgirl, the worst nights I've had was lastnight and a night last week when my gf slept over. I use a different (crappier) pillow when she stays over. I bet that plays a big part and I also that I'm sharing a bed (she's a huge bed hog!). My sinuses could also be playing a part.

Thanks for both of your inputs! That doesn't sound enjoyable at all Laura! I am starting to think that it's not the Asacol. I'll see how the next few nights go to determine if i should see a doctor. I generally like to avoid going...

I've never had headaches before getting diagnosed with UC, but after getting UC I used to have severe headaches every couple of weeks that would last for hours.

The weird thing is that once I started taking fiber supplements the headaches reduced in intensity and frequency and now I rarely have headaches.

I'm guessing that there was some sort of toxic build up that was happening that was then triggering the headaches, and somehow taking fiber supplements helps get those toxins out of the system.
