"butt" pain, but I don't think it's arthritis

I saw the earlier post about the anklosing spondylitis, and was wondering if anyone else experiences this pain like i have occassionally.  I will do my best to describe it. 

Occassionally after having a bowel movement, i will have this deep pain in my rear end.  It seems like it's near the general area of the tailbone, but it seems further info the middle of my body (front-to-back) than the tailbone.  I had a brusied tailbone after my last child was born, so I feel like i know the difference pretty well.  Anyway, the pain is a painfully dull,  throbbing, pain that is short-lasting (about 10-15 minutes long).  It makes it uncomfortable to ly or stand up in any way. 

Do you think this pain could be coming from the inflamed tissue in the colon itself?

I have gotten that during really severe flares, it's not AS or anything like that, it's actually a pretty common symptom for those with severe enough flares that are occurring in the colon/rectom (from either crohn's or UC).

I'm having the same pain in my tail-bone right now. It lasts for more than an hour after each BM. BTW, I'm flaring.

Wow, I haven't experienced anything quite that painful to last that long in my tailbone. I've had in right in the rectum, writhing pain during and somewhat after a bm, and kind of throbbing during the day with definite back discomfort, however.

I wouldn't say it's AS, but it reminds me of the cramping and pains in my lower back and tailbone during periods. I'd take flare pain over that any day...needless to say that it's been bliss for the 16 years without a period (hysterectomy)..lol.

The nerves are very close in that area, I wonder if Robaxacet and antispasmodics would help relieve it if taken on a more regular basis during flares.

Of course, I also suggest rectal meds to help with rectal inflammation.

In saying allll that, could you also have external hemmies? I find them very painful and radiating up into the tailbone area....painful to stand, sit, etc.

Hope you can get some relief.

I get this too... I'm not flaring. I just have formed (not even hard, really) BMs now, mostly, and it hurts so bad after. I can't sit, stand, lay on my bed...nothing. It throbs for a long time too.

And I finally understand why enema is not for everyone. I used to tolerate enema very well. But for my recent flare, my rectum is so badly inflamed that I can't tolerate enema at all. Last night, when I tried to squeeze just a bit of Salofalk enema into my rectum, it felt like putting iodine on a wound. I cried out in pain. The pain was even more severe than any abdominal pain I have experienced before/during a BM. And I expelled the enema right away, in tears.

I miss my good old days when I could manage my symptoms by using just enemas. And I'm on Prednisone again recently.

OUCH burnabygirl, I wonder if you might have a bad fissure going on, have you explained all this to your doc? If not, what you're going through right now certainly warrents a visit with your GI.

I just got the pain for the first time last night and I didn't have a chance to tell my doc about it yet. I have an appointment with a colorectal surgeon who takes care of my hemmies later this month. Surely he will let me know if he finds a fissure. I last saw him in March after he had removed 3 internal hemmies from me by rubber banding. I was fine at that time.
BTW, I do feel better today :)

Glad you had a better day burnabygirl, I hope you find relief soon, suffering with pain in that area is so difficult and frustrating and exhausting as well.

Guess what? I started to use vitamin E oil on my anus and in my rectum yesterday and I feel much better today. I apply vitamin E oil there after each BM religiously. Today I have no more butt pain during and after a BM and I see less blood.

That's awesome burnabygirl, I often use extra virgin olive oil for relief on my anal skin tags (I acutally use it daily as an all-over body moisturizer, it has healing benefits internally and externally, does wonders for bruises and many other skin conditions.

Laura, your anal sphincter could be in spasm and/or you could be suffering from levator ani as this can cause what you are describing...do a google search for levator ani and then another for pelvic floor dysfunction. Try taking a hot 30 min bath right after your next bm as this can help relax the spasms... Unfortunately anti spasmotic meds usually don't help in the rectal area as much as they do with abdominal spasms but a muscle relaxer can offer quite a bit of relief. Btw, most colorectal docs miss levator ani so you may need to mention it to them before they examine you.  This condition can be extremely painful and those with autoimmune diseases like UC are prone to it; the sooner you get it under control the better...there are also excellent results acheived with physical therapy...a good book to read is called A Headache in the Pelvis by Dr Wise.
