blood sugar and prednisone

Does anybody know if being on prednisone can have adverse affects on your blood sugar?  If so, how much? 

I just took my 1 hr glucose test on thursday to check for Gestational diabetes (GD), I was told at first I had passed with great numbers (My OB told me this) and then was called the next day to request I take the 3 hour glucose because I failed the 1 hour miserably (numbers were 190, anything over 139 is high).  The lady did say it could be because of my prednisone which is why they wanted me to do the 3 hour to make sure.   I felt fine during the 1 hour and only became slightly dizzy and light headed.

Saturday I took the 3 hour and supposedly failed it as well.  (fasting: 93, 1hr: 214, 2hr: 179)  I won't know for sure if I failed it till tomorrow when my OB looks at my results. 

Both my parents believe it's because of the prednisone and they consider those numbers borderline (moms an RN).  I'm not convinced probably because I'm not educated enough in the matter.  On top of everything else going on with this pregnancy I don't want to have to deal with GD.  I'm tired of feeling like crap (literally) all the time! 

Anybody know anything about it?  lol

     I am tapered down to 10 mgm of prednisone, started at 40 mgm back in June.  A few weeks ago I started having symptoms of diabetes (both parents were diabetics Type 2).   I went to my family doctor last week and he gave me the Accu-check monitor.  Friday, my FBS was normal, as was two hours after lunch but two hours after dinner my BS spiked to 243!  The doctor said to just be very careful of my sugar intake and to carefully monitor my BS.  Yesterday all was normal.  I only took an FBS today and it was 84.  I was also told that once I am off the prednisone completely my BS should return to normal.  Great, I already have osteoporosis due to the prednisone.

Yes, I was dx with type 2 in January due to pred. I have been up and down on it for 16 years. But I also had higher sugar carrying my second child which was before I had to take pred. for AIM.  So I would think it might even be a combo of both. But my BS showed up at 543 which was before my dinner. So I am on insulin now and trying to get off pred.

Good luck and hopefully you will get better when they take you off the pred.

I wish they had another drug to use due to all the side effects of this one. We can only hope in time and research they can do it. Have a grreat time with your baby in Nov.

Yes, prednisone and some other drugs are known to "cause" a case of diabetes fos sure. It often goes away when off the prednisone. Sometimes women get it when pregnant. They are very careful about that these days, so it is good they checked you. If you keep your sugars under tight control while pregnant, your pregnancy and baby will be ok. If the sugars stay high during the pregnancy, the baby could come out too large or have some complications. That's why they keep a tight check on you. They will probably have you lower your carbohydrate intake and may give you insulin. These will be for your benefit and the baby's. Good luck to you!

Just to let you know. I am 35 weeks pregnant and had a terrible flare during my 2nd trimester that put me in the hospital for 2 weeks and was started on high doses of prednisone. I hadn't had my GTT yet but my sugars did start to increase with the prednisone. I was started on insulin because i had lost so much weight with the flare and they wanted me to eat. My sugars have been really well controlled and i have been put out of work to make sure i didn't go early with the prednisone. the baby is doing great...he is measuring big but is healthy...which is what matters.
