If you've done it before, you could always just fast for the day. I've fasted for up to 3 days w/o any energy problems, although the first time I did it the fast was mentally challenging through 24 hours.

I agree with LuckyLindy but if you're like me (I get headaches from fasting for too long) then that'll put another damper on your trip...eating lightly will be helpful for the couple of days before the trip though.

I love volunteering at school and have lived through some very embarrassing moments during the last 27 years. Pack extra underwear and a sealable gallon sized bag in case of an accident. I always take along the pre-packaged Tucks wipes for good clean-ups. (They are safe to flush.) Please do take food with you and eat normally before the trip. Having low blood sugar while trying to look after yourself and children is not a good idea. For food I carry a couple of Ensure Plus Protein shakes. I like the vanilla and milk chocolate ones best. Boost also makes some very tasty peach or orange protein smoothies that are great for uc flares. I also take pre-packaged applesauce, jello and a banana. I rarely need to eat that much but just in case I get stuck somewhere it is nice to have back-up. I always carry the chewable Immodium. It doesn't always help with urgency but it really helps with any tension cramping. Do not be embarrassed to reveal your needs to the teacher. I have always found the teachers very supportive. After all you are volunteering while enduring a chronic illness flare. You deserve kudos!!!

My hubby had to do pretty much all the volunteering for our 2 kids when they were in elementary school...I think I was able to do it once for my daughter only and then it became too difficult with this DD, mainly cuz they always had morning field trips but my husband loved taking the day off work to go on the trips anyways plus the kids loved him.

You'll be fine. Get up 3 hours prior to time to leave, and take 2 immodium as soon as you get up (I usually eat really light as soon as I wake, banana). By the time you are heading out the door the gut should have already settled down enough to get you through the day. Once you get on your way and see that things are actually going great, your mind will start to ease and you can enjoy the day.

Risan..I'm happy you are able to look forward to the field trip with your little girl! I don't have UC, but I do have Interstial Cystitis (hardly a comparison) but I often make the choice between drinking a bottle of water or knowing that I will then spend the next couple of hours hunting for restrooms. My family understands my painful bladder and urgent need for a restroom, but I find it difficult explaining it to others, they just think I'm the crazy lady always running to the restroom shakehead

I hope the field trip went well.  I'm in the same situation.  My son just brought home a slip for the pumpkin farm.  He is four and my second child.  My first child I got to go on all the field trips because I didn't have uc yet.  I want to go and I said I would chaperone but I'm scared to death of pooping in my pants.  I also get myself worked up if I know there are no bathrooms and I can't stop.  My drive is about 30-45 minutes.  I was thinking of asking the teacher if I could drive myself also but I also want to seen my sons face on the bus(its his first time).  This is the worst part about UC I think.  When you have kids it is so hard and you miss so much.  I hate UC.
