Hi,
I was wondering if generally speaking, flare ups got worse or were easier to manage as time progresses.
Thanks.

statements 1 and 3 pretty much mean the same thing.
My flares in the beginning were the worst because 1) not on any meds and 2) it took a few years to get the scheduling of the rectal meds down pat to use them earlier to treat flares as early as possible.
One has to recognise the symptoms of early flares, however...not to be confused with the 20 times a day of bloody razor-blade diarrhea.

My flares were horrible in the beginning and very hard to control. As the the years went by, they were easier to get control of because I began to learn what my body was trying to tell me. So the earlier I knew that a flare was coming the easier it became to tame it.

Oh interesting question, I will check back to see the results of this when more people answer. For the first time I wasn't "none of the above", LOL. I've only had one flare so far, so I'm interested to see if subsequent flares get easier or worse for most people.

yeah, I can't really answer either- my first inkling of anything being *wrong* was pretty minor- mucousy stools & urgency. I guess that was my initial flare. Got on Rowasa & Asacol & that took care of things for years. Went off Asacol in 2007, have been flaring to some degree or less ever since- and it's run the gamut of severity, from flat-out stuck in bed to working nearly full-time. Sooo... does that count as 2 flares? I mean, I'm still in one, sort of... How about
an option for those who started flaring & never really stopped? No clear cut flaring/not flaring, just constant low-grade inflammation. I think for a lot of us, that's how it is.

For me, once we found medicine that would work with my body, I was fine. Discovered I have seasonal flares, and learned quickly that the only way to help the flare go away is with a diet change. They are very much controllable.
