New here, tired of bleeding

I am new on here, and I am finding some good info so far. I have been having problems with the bleeding for the last 2 years, but it just got worse this year. I went to a digestive specialist that did a colonoscopy, in 08, she told me I had polops and a lesion. Returned to the emergency room in the beginning of July of this year, just to be admitted for 4 days. given another colonoscopy, some pills and released. It took my regular doctor to tell me that I have ulcerative colitis. 2009 sucks, I have been diagnosed with so many things that I want to crawl in a hole somewhere (in a manner of thinking). High chlolesterol, borderline diabetic, ulcerative colitis, deppression, back problems, hemerrhoids, arthritis, and I have had 2 surgeries in the last 3 months. Just wanted to let some steam out, thanks ahead of time for listening.

badazz...you've definitely had a lot going on this year! Well, hopefully everything will fall into place asap....and hope you're feeling fine soon. What UC meds are you on and how have they been working for you so far?

I am on Balsalazide. It was working pretty good for a little while, but now, my UC is flared up. I am just giving it a little while to see if it gets back under control.

     So sorry to hear you have had a bad year.  This year has been a bummer for me too sad .

     I've been on Balsalazide for nine years.  It is a maintenance drug but doesn't seem to be keeping me out of flares.  I also take 50 mgm of 6MP...again not doing much.  However, I was diagnosed in 1998 with ulcerative proctitis and thankfully the disease hasn't spread further into my colon.  I've been on prednisone too numerous times to mention and it has given me osteoporosis, high blood pressure, and with this lastest flare...increased my blood sugar.

     Did the doctor mention prednisone to you or rectal meds?  It seems I am having a bit of luck with the Cort enemas and Canasa.

Hello, I hope you feel better try not to think negitive i get this Why Me thing going on also and try to pull myself out of it i know easier said than done though. I suffer from depression also and think it makes it harder (just my opion). For me I am trying to hold up and see if this flare ever goes away and trying to think possitive that tomorrow will be better. Good Luck & Hang in there.

I smoked since I was 13, went to Vietnam, became a police officer, quit smoking 13 yrs ago....developed Ulcerative colitis about a year later...was in the hospital for 2 weeks...they almost removed my colon...released me after two weeks of intense steroid and azical meds....I was in pain and bleeding constantly...

Then after suffering for about 4 months....I heard that the AMA (American Medical Association) did a study on the "positive effects of nicotine" on UC and Turrets syndrome and some other disease... I immediately thought that I had smoked all my life and didn't get UC until I was 50...Well, I started smoking and about 24 hours later....symptoms were disappearing....and then gone...no meds, through them away...and still no UC...

Now, I quit smoking again over a year ago....and take nicotine lozenges.....still no symptoms...no meds....no UC....yes, I am taking approximately 24 lozenges a day, but even with the price of the lozenges.....no UC and no medications seems to win out...

Now I know that the So called Doctors want to fight "smoking" with a vengeance.....at the expense of letting those with UC suffer with expensive drugs that they approve of.....

Thanks guys for the responses, it makes me feel better knowing that I am not alone in this. I smoked for 19 years, I don't think that I would ever pick up another cigarette, even if the chances of getting this to subdue. I have been quit for about 6 years, and I feel better knowing that I not waking up coughing and gasping when I wake up. I am feeling better now, I have been off work for 3 months and counting from shoulder surgery, so that is just another notch in the belt. And thanks for your service in Nam, Bob.

     I smoked too, but only a few cigarettes a day.  Doc said it was a few too many.  I often thought of going back to smoking too but our close friends who smoked now have COPD and lung cancer.  Guess IBD doesn't look too bad in comparison.
