Second opinion on pathology finally came back- No surgery

I had been preparing myself for what looked like inevitable surgery due to dysplasia found in my colonoscopy back in May.  I sought out a second opinion, had another colonscopy in August, which found no dysplasia and even met with a surgeon at UCSF.  What did not happen soon enough was the delivery of the slides from the colonscopy biopsies back in May.  My new doctor wanted his pathologist to review them and the other lab took forever to finally get them sent.  I felt like my life was on hold.  I have a six month old and a four year old and I was really hoping that I could wait for next summer to have this surgery, but I did not want to develop a full blown cancer either.  So it was just going to have to happen when dysplasia was confirmed- I had accepted it.  But I received the call from my GI on Thursday and he said that his pathologist did not see dysplasia and I would not require surgery.  I now have to concentrate on getting off Prednisone and starting 6-mp.  I've done a lot of reading on the J-pouch forums and will be better prepared to accept the surgery in the future if my meds don't work or dysplasia is found in the future.  I'm just grateful that it's not going to be this year.

The diagnosis isn't really a mistake, but the pathologist has to make a call whether they see dysplasia or if it is just damage from inflamation.  The doctor explained that they tend to be conservative when making the call, but he said the second opinion pathologist sees a lot of these cases and did not consider my biopsies adenomatous.  I will have another colonscopy in 4 months.
