Mezavant and Chest pains?

My GI Dr. switched me from 4mg of Asacol per day to 2.4mg of Mezavant. After a few days I started feeling improvements for the first time in a year, but also started having chest pain and terrible coughing fits. Each day that passed, I started coughing more and more. Went to see my regular Dr. with chest pain and flem, she said I was fine and need some ventolin or something for breathing. My GI called me the next day and said I am probably allergic to Mezavant, discontinue and go back on Asacol. Well I have been taking Asacol now for a few days and the coughing and chest pain wont go away. From what I know, Asacol and Mezavant (time released) are the same. Has anybody had this before?

Hi...Just wanted to clarify the dosage you typed...I'm assuming it should read Asacol 4g (4000mg) and Mezavant 2.4g (2400mg)...correct?

When you were on the Asacol...did you have any respiratory side effects at all?

It may seem that you could be allergic to salicylates or just 5ASA...or it could be coincidence that you have a chest infection.

Regardless, you should be checked out, have a ct scan and blood tests.
There are some 5ASA lung-induced problems...but there could also be heart.

You might also have a case of reflux that causes the coughing or cough-induced asthma that's shown itself at this time.

So, look back and if you've had coughing in the past, there might be a connection....but you do need a doctor to do the proper testing as to make sure it's not related to the 5ASA.

Are you taking any other meds or supplements or just started any psyllium?

Hi Quincy, I ment to say 5 pills twice a day at 400mg each so, 4grams per day? I think I have a chest infection because I have had flem forever, but my doctor says I'm okay. I dont believe it. But thanks for your advice I really appreciate it.

Not taking anything for a few days now to see if it makes a difference. We shall see. Not coughing as much right now, but still have chest pains on the left side of my heart.

I did have PE (pulminary emboslism) when I was in the hospital last June and have had issues since. I guess I will have to keep talking to my doctor.

What doctor did you see...the GI or GP?

Yes, see another doc aside from the GI...

Could be a cold, could be bronchitis, could be pneumonia?
