Confusion about blood

When I had 'bloody diarrhea' it didn't look like diarrhea because there was no actual poo in the toilet. It was just dark red water with white tissue looking stuff and black dots like coffee grinds. When I think of blood from a hemmy, I think just bright red blood when you wipe.

I have not had experience with bloody d (never was one of my symptoms) but I do know that if what you're seeing is dark red, almost black blood, it is most likely not from hemmies. It's darker because it has had time to oxidize which means it's coming from higher up in your colon. Now if it were bright red and you see it mostly on tp then it's possibly aggravated hemmies.

For me bleeding is a huge issue...hard for me to get rid of it.  When I am having "d" and bleeding I have blood mixed in with the stool - the stool is often actually red as is the toliet water.  I usually have quite a bit of mucus passed when bleeding like that as well...sometimes just blood and mucus, I have problems with hemmis too but when it is just the hemmis bleeding the blood is mostly just on the toliet paper and sometimes on the outside of formed stool.  I am currently tapering off pred.  I need to change my signature because I had to go all the way back up to 40 mg and am going to have to restart the taper because of starting to pass blood and mucus AGAIN. 

Bright red blood is indicative of bleeding from hemmeroids, fissure or rectal flaring. Darker the blood the further along the digestive track it is. So dark red/black looking blood is probably from higher in your colon since you have pancolitis. The problem with bleeding higher in the intestinal track is that is can take a little bit of time for it (the blood) to reach your rectum so in the meantime while it's trying to be eliminated, more blood is leaking. And the whole process repeats.

When I have bloody diarrhea, it has ranged from pure liquid stool with a lot of blood - both dark and light. No clots. Or pure blood and mucous.
