Prometheus Test

My GI dr wants me to get this test done, however my insurance won't give me a straight answer on whether or not it will be covered.  Has anyone had it done and know about how much it costs? 

Also, what exactly does it do?  I'm not really understanding that part...

It's supposed to differentiate between UC and Crohn's. I've had three GI's, and none of them has used this test. They just didn't consider it reliable enough. Others may have different opinions.

I had the test to see if 6MP would work for me.  It showed that 50mg. was not therapuetic and since 75 mg. made me sick the doctor had me stop it after 4 months - it was not doing anything.  There are many tests the prometheus does.  One is see if you have celiac.  Here is their website and tests.  They are expensive depending on what you have done.  I believe mine were $600 but my insurance covered it...

There are different tests that Prometheus does. I had the IBD Serology 7. When it came back it said 'consistent with UC' and that was enough for my GI combined with the colonoscopy and the upper GI series of x-rays I had.

My GI told me that if I called my insurance company first that it should be covered if I had it done in a hospital. So I did and I made a $75 co-pay and done.

I thought the Prometheus was like 93% reliable? Or have I gotten my facts wrong. I thought it was worth it to have a definite dx.

If there's a chance that you have to pay for it yourself, you should go to the Prometheus labs website. Last time I checked they had a form you could fill out to pre-pay with a credit card and get a decent-sized discount. I think I had the doctor send in that form with the blood. That way, if I wound up having to pay at least it would be less.

The test I had done there was to test whether the dose of 6MP was the right dose for me. Their website also has descriptions of all their tests.
