     I've had ulcerative proctitis for eleven years.  My main complaint is that awful pressure in the rectum.  I have bleeding (bright red...so may be those internal hemorrhoids) and some mucus  but my bowel movements are formed and the most I have are five a day...usually I have just one or two, but always that pressure!  Anyone else with this?  I refuse to go back on the prednisone.  I am trying to retain the Cort enemas but not much luck.  I am lucky if it stays in five minutes.  What I do is take the Cort enema, empty out and then insert a Canasa suppository.  This seems to help somewhat.  I am thinking of calling my GI doctor tomorrow and maybe he can place me on the Cortafoam.

Christine, I've had really good luck with the hydrocortisone suppositories. I can't use Canasa or Rowasa because I don't tolerate Mesalamine in any form, so my doc gave me the suppositories to fight on the post-antibiotic nasties.

Wow, I can relate to your discomfort when I'm flaring. I agree that if the liquid enemas are hard to retain, ask for the foam or the steroid suppositories or both.

Yes, I can relate to that feeling of pressure. It is really har dto explain what that feels. It is really annoying. I also have lots of bleeding when flaring, I have learned that if I feel the pressure, have bleeding and mucus it is not hemmis (although I wish it were), it is the inflamation in your rectum that is not healed. If the flare is not too bad Canasa helps with that last rectal inflamation, however, if I have bleeding and mucus Canasa alone will not work.

     Well, today is very bad.  I went to the bathroom in excess of eight times and I cannot hold it.  Good thing I have a port a pot in mostly every room of the house.  Guess I shouldn't have had that spaghetti and meatballs last night..lol.  Really suffering for it today.  I called my GI doctor a few hours ago but still no call back.  He is po'd at me for not going on Remicade.  His associate said I definitely am NOT a candidate for it since I tested positive for TB back in the 60's.  Chest xray is normal but he said the TB virus is probably dormant in my system and Remicade could activate it.  Not too many options open to me now.  Prednisone has given me osteoporosis and high blood presssure and this last round increased my blood sugar to 237!  I've been off the prednisone since the end of August and my blood pressure is well controlled and my blood glucose is back to normal too.  Just the thought of going back on prednisone gives me nightmares but if that is the only thing left to do...guess I have to bite the bullet.

Just a thought...how sure is your GI (and you!) that your UC is still UP and hasn't spread? If it has (which I hope it hasn't) a different oral med (Asacol, Lialda, Apriso) might help.

Whatever the case, I hope you feel better soon.

     Thanks fruitgal.  I was going to mention Lialda to him.  I believe I am probably immune to Colazal by now after all these years.  I am on 50 mgm of 6MP too!  That is doing absolutely nothing.  He had me on 100 mgm of 6MP but it sent my white count down to 1.6.  It is at 3.5 now which is where he wants it.  You may be right about the UP spreading into my colon but he did a sigmoidoscope in May and it was limited to 15 or 20 cm and clear further up.  I am supposed to have a colonoscopy on the 17th of this month but I am not too sure about having it while flaring.  A few years back he could only go up 20 cm because he was fearful of perforating the ulcers.  My last colonoscopy was May of 08 and it was still UP.

I am so sorry you might have to go back on pred since you had so many problems with it. I have been lucky to only be on it twice so far and have not had bad reactions to it. I think that many times proctitis and rectal inflammation is the HARDEST to treat. It also causes so much bleeding! I was on Lialda for over two years and it did help me but it did not get me out of true flares. I know it lessened the effects of the flare and lessened the frequency of the flares though. I also wonder if a steroid suppository would help you...
