Which antibiotic??

I have a reoccuring gum infection (yes, I need the teeth out but not yet).  Last time I remember taking antibiotics for anything I think it was a Z-pak for sinus infection.  I KNOW that amoxicillin brought on my very first bleeding episode.  Any recommendations there before I call my dentist or NP? I also know over the years antibiotics have given me diarrhea - don't want to go there again.

Unfortunately this is very individual, no one can predict which is the best one for you. It's probably best to ask your GI.

I was afraid you all would say that!  Remember my specialist is 150 miles away. I can call and ask however.  Just wondering what is best on the colon.

I think the general consensus is that most of us are bothered by the -cillin and -cycline drugs. I also can't take most of the -mycins. I do get by with the Z-pack, I think because it's only for five days. But I always double my probiotics when taking it. I've also taken Cipro, but it has other problems that some people don't want to risk.

I'm sure you won't forget to, but up your probiotic and take it at least two hours after your last dose of antibiotics for the day.

Hope you get through this with no problems!

Thanks all!  fruitgirl - I did not know that about the probiotics.  I will up the dose - take 2 Align but I did not know about spacing it with the antibiotic!

DakotaGirl had problems with an infected tooth last yr-- maybe she'll come on & advise you RE safest antibiotic. In the meantime, rinse often with warm salt water-- salt is a natural disinfectant. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

(((Elaine))) I had dental issues this summer and it was NOT fun!! My son with UC has taken the Z-pack and penicillin without IBD issues. Both times I was a nervous wreck. When I was researching I came across the following list of antibiotics that are most and least likely to cause c.diff which was my biggest worry for my son.

Something I learned with my dental woe - don't take rx pain meds on an empty stomach!!!!!!

Cleocin (really clindamycin)

"SAFE" TO TAKE:
Macrodantin (Macrobid)

Z-pack has always worked best for me since it's such a rapid dose and over with. Hope things get better soon, Elaine.

Z-pack seems safest for me too.  The other one I took was Flagyl when first diagnosed I had to stop because it made me worse!  I am very sensitive to any medications, darn it!!

Oh tell me about it. I'm scared to death because I'm having knee surgery in a couple of weeks and it's not the surgery I'm anxious about...it's the anesethia (sp?) and the after meds....I get horribly sick. I'm not a good med taker that is for sure.

I have been putting off knee replacement for a couple years - first because my husband was diagnosed with lung cancer and then me UC.  I am nervous (scared) about the pain control - since all pain killers make me sick.  I had my gallbladder out a few years ago and found I could take demerol and versid ok and Tylenol works great for me after the major pain.  They have wonderful medicine for nausea and vomiting - be sure when you go for the prep, etc. to tell them you need it right in the IV WITH the anesthesia.  Good luck and let us know how it goes!

By the way I would have my knee replacement now while my UC is best but winter is here in central NY and a long way to drive to hospital and rehab!  Early Spring!
