Will not using a full dose of rowesa enema help my hair?

  I honestly do not know if my hair has turned very thin or a lot has fallen out. I have always shed hair so I am not sure. I did not notice any hair loss like I did after the birth of my daughter. I was pulling handfulls out all the time and my bed was full of it then. I just know I used to have tons of hair. If I wanted it up I had to use a big barrett for just the front of my hair and now that big barrett will hold all of my hair. I do not have UC very bad, mucus, bleeding with an enflamed feeling is my worst complaint.  Has anyone had any success with cutting back the amount of the enema? I had some stomach discomfort from the enema but that has finally started to decrease. I like how it takes care of my symptoms and I would rather not have to quit completely.

when did you start the enemas?

Have you had your thyroid checked to see if it's low or high?

ARe you on any other medications? any other supplements?

Were you on pred over the past 6 months?

One can lose up to 100 hair a day normally and every 2 - 4 years all of the hair is eventually replaced. Add a disease where one has added extreme stress on the body, change in diet, hormonal changes....that will increase the shedding. But, it won't happen overnight.
One has to look back 3 - 6 months.

If the enema is helping, you might ask the doctor to change you to a 2 gram dosage of 5ASA rather than the 4 gram.

     I never noticed any hair loss on prednisone, but Idid when taking the 6MP, especially when he raised my dose to 100 mgm!!!  Felt like all around crap.  Now off the 6MP and onto Remicade.  If I lose more hair, so be it.  I just need relief from ulcerative proctitis and feel soooo much better after just my first infusion.

One supplement that can help with the hairloss is Biotin 5mgs or 5000mgs. It can take about a month or two before you notice the difference but I swear by it because it not only helped my hair but it got rid of the deep horizontal ridges in my nails too. I can't comment on the hairloss and Asacol though because I never had the hairloss while being on it.

 Yes I had a complete blood screening done in Oct. when I went into my family doctor. He rolled his eyes at my gyn saying it was hemmroids since I had diverticulitis that ruptured in 05. So he was actually looking for infection and sent me to the colonoscopy thinking I was having a recurrance.

              I was diagnosed in mid october with UC and have been on rowesa ever since.  He put me on Lialda as well but I have been horrible about taking it. I feel fine so I forget to take my pills. I suppose it could be just part of a natural shedding or a hormonal change. My husband says I do not look like I have lost a lot of hair and there are no bald spots. If stress can affect hair then that would explain a great deal. The same major stress that caused the UC could have caused my hair to fall out or get very thin.  

            Anyone have good results with the hydrocortisone suppositories? I had those when they thought it was hemmroids but I noticed on the insert that it was also for UC. It improved my symptoms right away which made me think it was hemmroids. I was only on them for 10 days though. Are there the same side effects over long term use?

I was in the same boat as Chirstine while on 6mp, I was so nervous about losing my hair that I started taking Biotin...It seems like it's helped some but I'm about to start Remicade and have heard horror stories about hair loss on Remi.

I've done some research and found a med called propecia that is apparently a very good treatment to not only stop hair loss but alos help regrow it.  I believe it's a treatment for only male adults however...

sherry...it's 5000mcg (micrograms) or 5mg. just clarifying.

You could take a half dosage of the Rowasa mom, but it would be best if you used an amount that could go higher than the rectum...meaning the 30gr instead of 15gr.

You have lots of other issues rather than assuming it's only the 5ASA.....but do maybe include a good multi-B that includes the biotin as Sherry suggested.

 The weird thing is that when I had diverticulitis really bad with no insurance I would have this infection going on for months. I would have pain with a 99 something fever and mucus. I never had my hair fall out. When the infections started turning into abscesses I still did not loose my hair. One day the pain was terrible yet again.  I remember wishing it could just get cut out and be done with it. A few days later my colon ruptured and I got my wish. Over a foot of my colon was diseased and I had to have an ileostomy for a couple of months.  It never effected my hair. The surgeon said I would probably have problems with scar tissue later on since I was only 32 at the time. Having gone through that has taught me one thing, if my symptoms got to the point where they were no longer just annoying but really disrupted my life I would not think twice about removing my colon. I went for two months and once my mom got me some rings to help with the leaking it did not bother me. It became very normal I even had times where I thought it was more convenient then having to BM the normal way.
