Elaine, the quadriceps is the big muscle in the front of your thigh, going from your knee to your hip. Quad sets are simply tightening this muscle, holding it for a couple of seconds and then relaxing. You don't have to move your leg at all, just tighten that muscle. You can do it sitting in your chair, lying in bed, pretty much anywhere. It's the first exercise they'll give you after surgery, also.
I do so hope you're able to have your surgery, I know you've been suffering with those knees for quite a while now.
ElephantPipe, I was 60. It was first recommended to me when I was about 55, but I wanted to wait until after I stopped working. Now, knowing how easy it was for me, I wish I'd done it right then. My ortho says he'd rather do a replacement at 50 and have to do another in 15-20 years than to wait until the person is 65 and all of the muscles in the leg are atrophied from lack of use. He says there's no such thing as "too young" if your joint isn't functional.
