Lialda comes out as it goes in ?

hi,
i remember reading some old posts saying their lialda is not dissolving in body & someone said something about body ph being the reason...i searched but could not find that post. Past few days - end of my stools is like soda bubble with both canasa tablets on top.... even the orange cover of those tables is nearly intact - on top of this i am flaring! my body is not getting complete medication required. What happened - canasa was suiting me so well. should i change to asacol? help!

Hi....are you not still on the Canasa?
They are suppositories, I think you've gotten the Canasa and Lialda mixed up in your post. I'm assuming you mean the Lialda in a bubble..



Do you take the Lialda with food or on an empty stomach?



The bubble thingie is interestingly described, ...lol....as long as the pill is opened somewhat, the contents should be dispersed.

yes quincy.... my mistake - the Lialda comes out :-D Thanks for the link. Is shifting from Lialda to asacol a good idea? I saw lialda come out in stools just for 2 days...i dnt see it anymore....lialda really worked for me earlier.

:-D half my day is spent in thinking about my stools- no wonder i came up with "soda bubble" lol

Apriso is the same type drug as lialda (5ASA mesalamine), but breaks down at a different PH level and might be a good choice.

Yes, that was me that made those posts....doc switched me to apriso, and it did work better.  i ultimately had to switch to remicade and am doing pretty good with it.  hope it works out for you

yes ...even i would like to know that... also i never knew Lialda is only for Pancolitis. What is Aspiro for?

They're all released starting in either the terminal ileum or before and then go into the colon.

All are meant to cover most of the colon....but one should use rectal meds in conjunction with the oral 5ASA meds to cover the entire portion that's involved.

If one has the cecum involved as well as the entire colon or even the cecum and the rectum, one would have to determine which med could work best depending on PH level or bacteria to dissolve the coating and enhance the release.

Pentasa is supposed to be released in the duodenum....so, it's a good med for CD (small intestine involvement) as well as UCers...

Try not to think only left side vs pancolitis....all should be still treated with oral/rectal.

Justlivelife, it's not surprising that your GI wouldn't mention rectal meds. Some docs think of treating Pancolitis with rectals meds as the equivalent of trying to swat a charging elephant with a fly swatter. But after reading so many experiences from people on here over the years, doing the both end approach really can work for some people with Pan. But also too, maybe because you had such a bad reaction to Asacol, maybe your doc didn't want to chance Rowasa since it's a liquid version mesalamine? What exactly were your symptoms when you were put on Asacol? Just curious :)

Uc is Ulcerative Colitis, that is not an umbrella term for the other types of colitis's. UC and Crohn's are under the umbrella term of IBD. Other types of colitis's do not fall within the IBD category. Because other types of colitis's have a chance of being cured and IBD does not. When you see someone say they have Left sided, Pancolitis, sigmoiditis etc. It just indicates where in the colon the inflammation spreads.

Uc can be "cured" by having the large intestine removed, however with the other types of colitis's they can be cured with medication and time without having the LI removed. The other types of colitis's are radiation colitis, infectious colitis and microscopic colitis. I think there is another one or two out there but I can't remember off the top of my head. But radiation colitis is due to the radiation that one would receive when they has cancer, microscopic colitis is one is exposed to enviromental or chemical contagions and of course infectious colitis is due to "gut" bugs.

So you don't have any issue with the Lialda then JLL?
