I have come to the conclusion my Asacol isn't working. I just found five in my last BM. I want to keep taking the 5-ASA drugs though becuase it seems like they are the best due to less side affects and helping with colon cancer. Is it reasonable to think another 5-ASA would do any better than the Asacol? How do they compare as far as potency and price?

Part of the reason I switched from Asacol to Apriso was because I was finding Asacol capsules in my stool with medicine still in them. Apriso starts dissolving at a lower pH than Asacol, and people with UC are thought to have a lower gut pH than people who don't. The once-day dosing is pretty sweet, too.

I would def. try another one.  I've only been on the Asacol and Rowasa but I know from reading here that lots of people have switched from one to another and found benefits.

There are others to try, including sulfasalazine which is very cheap, as long as sulfa doesn't bother you. Asacol in fact made me worse after taking it a while. Whether it really prevents colon cancer is questionable.

If you want it to release earlier than Pentasa is a good one to use. I also found the Asacol was leaving my body whole.

Thanks for all the responses. Doubt I'll be able to get anything until after Christmas though. A'm I correct in saying the sulfasalazines have more negative side effects than the meslamines?

Yes, some people are allergic to Sulpha so it can have side effects. 5ASA are generally well tolerated and there are various different forms, each works differently for different people. If you are in a flare I'd suggest taking rectal meds in addition to tablets/granules etc.
