Hi im in the hospital right now Merry Christmas! scheduled for a colonoscopy 2 days after a major flareup that put me in the emergency room on Christmas. im quite hesitant to have this procedure performed right after the flareup because of possible complications if they were to accidentally perforate the colon wall while my insides are still so raw from the flare up not to mention the unexplained infection i had which has my fevers up to 104 and down to normal for the first time today, any suggestions past experiences or educated opinions would be really helpfull. i am really curious about any tests that might supplement for a colonoscopy which isnt so invasive and possibly harmful in the early stages of recovery. or does it even matter? thanks for your help in advance

I think the colonoscopy will be the only way to tell what's going on inside your colon. Sorry story, but really I think it might be a good idea to talk it over with your doc and tell him of your concerns. Maybe they will only need to do a sigmoidscopy, but really, discuss it and make the right decision for you.

It might also depend on how bad it really is in there. I was flaring for months my first time, tons of bloody mucous every hour. They did a colonoscopy and everything was fine! But sure, ask questions, it might ease some fears. Your symptoms may be really bad, while the inside isn't as fragile as you may think. If that makes sense. Hope it goes well!

I mean, I had UC and it was bad, but I mean no complications lol

Ask the doctor but I believe you'll be okay. Sorry you're in the hospital and hope you recover soon. The colonoscopy is the best way for them to know what's going on and how to treat it.

Sorry to hear you are in hospital - definately talk to the doc. I had a sigmoidoscopy when in hospital and in a major flair before and they seriously sedated me - I suppose they will want to know what is going on in there! Hang in there!

with all the new technology the colonoscopy test are not that bad now....just relax you will be sedated.....that way they can detect anything. good luck...god bless...

     I was hospitalized for ten days in May of 08.  Like you, I was also extremely concerned about them performing a colonoscopy with me in such a bad flare.  The doctor used a pediatric scope.  Hope this post isn't too late getting to you but we were away for a few days and I just read it.  Good luck and I hope you feel better.

One of the doctors I met said "the unsedated colonoscopy is a challenge itself". I do not think you need to worry about perforating your colon unless it is very bad now. Doctors will see the real situation as they insert the probe. Good luck, and just enjoy this pain :)

Hi...a colonoscopy is really the best answer because it allows the docs to see how far the UC goes around your colon and how bad (or good) things really are. You should not be worried about perforations. As soon as they feel that your colon is too bad for the colonoscopy they will stop. My son had one done when he was very sick and they only made it to the bend leading to the transverse colon and decided to stop. However, it let them know exactly what they were up against.

     about five years ago the same thing happened to me as Collicat's son.  I was in a flare and the doctor was only able to go up 20 cm.  I was upset because he knew I was in a flare and I took that crappy prep for naught..rolleyes .
