So here I am about a month later..I'm 21 years old, have been taking the Asacol, been feeling great (my symptoms of UC are minor, liattle bit of the D, stomach pains no blood) I recently went to Orlando!! (I'm from Michigan) had a great time down there, didnt really take to much of the asacol, came back about 4 days ago..and really havent taken the meds, Ive been feeling great!!

andd unforunatly right now I got some problems..just started about 20 minutes ago!

any suggestions, I took a pill but i figure its not gonna do much right now.

one whole pill? how many were you supposed to be on?

Do the asacol and call the doc for rectal meds...I'd suggest the 5-ASA retention enemas (either Rowasa if you're in the US or Salofalk or Pentasa if you're not)

The number 1 known reason for a Uc flare is the lack of med compliance. Yes start taking your Asacol again but take the dose you were on originally, not just one pill. I hope this lesson has taught you to stay on top of your medication regimine? I was your age once too, thought I could beat this beast by just wishing it away...not true but it took a long time for me to realize this.

Yep, take your meds the way they were prescribed.  And consider the rectal meds.

An improvement in symptoms is normally an indication that the drug you've been prescribed is taking effect. Why discontinue? Doing so is counter-productive, remain compliant.

I take it 3 times daily, and now I'm taking it and not stopping!

The only reason why i discontinued was because I felt better, I really thought I'd be fine unforunatly its not true,

     That is typical.  When in remission we feel great, like nothing in the world is wrong with us.  Been there.  I was diagnosed at the ripe old age of 52.  Prior to that, I never took anything more than a vitamin, aspirin or tylenol and antibiotics when prescribed (which I think was too often by my family physician when I was young).  I had severe symptoms back in 98 and had to be hospitalized which is where I was diagnosed following a colonoscopy.  When sent home I was on prednisone (tapering...never stop that stuff cold turkey it could have devastating results) and Asacol.  Like you, when I went into remission, I thought, what the heck do I need to take this stuff for?  I was in remission for two glorious years.  Then, boom, flared again.  This time the doctor put me on Colazal because my colitis is located in the rectum.  I stuck with the Colazal but since my symptoms were getting worse, had to go on the 6MP along with the prednisone.  Long story short, the 6MP stopped working and I am now on Remicade which is doing wonders.  I still take the Colazal though and won't stop until the doctor tells me to.

     Take your meds!  Watch your diet!  When flaring stick to low residue.  Good luck.  Unfortunately, this is a life long disease until they find a cure.

Symptoms are last thing to show up, first thing to leave. By time you have symptoms the colon has already been flaring, just not enough to let you know about it. Great rule of thumb is to never base you med taking on how you feel. How you feel really has nothing to do with your health. You can feel wonderful and have a heart attack in the same minute.

Best advice I can give you is to always have a rectal med on hand to use if needed. Don't wait until you need some. I always have Rowasa and steroid enemas stashed in my cabinet so I can go to them immediately if need be.

I want to add that 3 asacol a day won't do much.....especially if you're in a flare.

You should also get the doc to prescribe rectal meds of some kind. Even for you (you're sensitive to the 5ASA meds?? is that why you're on a low dosage?)...canasa is a good start.

Hey Sal, what part of MI are you from? I'm 22 and newly diagnosed with UC. Like yourself, I was feeling great once I started my meds. But now I'm flaring again and it absolutely sucks!! Just stick to your medicine and try to keep a positive attitude!

Are they 800mg tablets or 400mg? 3 400mg is not very much.

Depending on how bad your symptoms get your doctor might increase your dose.

Hope this teaches you to take your medication regularly.

If I miss doses of mine I start to notice symptoms pretty quickly.

I hope you feel better soon. You may consider trying enemas or suppositories too.
