OT (maybe) blocked tear duct?

A couple of weeks ago I thought I was getting an eye infection but it turned out that it was my dry eye acting up - used my dry eye drops and it worked.  It sort of cleared but now I am having another issue.  My right eye will tear up at random times and it remains wetter then normal thru out the day.  When I wake up, it has some crustiness.  My eyes are not red at all but this is driving me nuts.  I am thinking that it might be a blocked tear duct.  If anyone has had a blocked tear duct, does this sound like what you experienced?  I already have a docs appointment next week for my tweaked out rotator cuff so I will bring it up to her then.  But if anyone has any advice on how to make this stop I would greatly appreciate it! smile

I had similar symptoms, watery eye and morning crustiness, and my eye doctor said it was dry eye. I used the dry eye drops she recommended, Refresh, and the symptoms cleared after a few weeks. Now I only get it on ocassion.

Believe it or not probably dry eye.  My eye surgeon explaned that to me and you need to continue your drops.  There is a prescription drop that may help if it does not clear up.

Question about your rotator cuff - what are your symptoms.  I know this is off subject but my arm is hurting so much and I have been blaming prednisone after affects but that was August.  ElaineNY

I have been using Systane or sometimes Bausch and Lomb dry eye drops that I got from the eye doc. It doesn't seem to help much. I've had dry eye for about 2 years but this is a progression for me I guess then.

Elaine, back in September I threw a stick and I felt a sharp pain in my shoulder. I thought it was a pulled muscle but it never got better. So I went to the doc and she started me on physical therapy. That has helped tremendously with the muscle pain associated from me not using that arm much due to the pain, however, my joint pain (rotator cuff) is not much better. So this appointment I have is a follow up and I will probably have a MRI to see what I did.

But the symptoms that I am having is: at rest if feels as if someone is taking a dagger and repeatedly stabbing my shoulder (near the front), I can't sleep on that side and if I roll over in the middle of the night it wakes me up, I can't move my shoulder into a forward motion or it sets off the pain, nor can I shrug. Also, muscle related, I get a sharp shooting pain that radiates from my shoulder and up my neck - now that HURTS and also down my arm and down my shoulder blade.

Thanks Red - mine sounds like your muscle problems - not much joint.  Feels like some socked me in the arm sometimes and reaching back, etc.  YUCK!  Hope yours feels better soon.  I guess I will need an MRI or ? to find out for sure.

ps.  Did you ever try the prescription Restasis for your eyes - did not really help mine.

Elaine, you can ask your doc about physical therapy. It really does help and they can teach you the proper way to do it at home too. I've had a lot of p/t over the years for various reasons and it truly does help. And no, I haven't tried Restasis yet. If my eye is still giving me trouble then I will ask the doc about it and see what she says.

You might try the Refresh drops for NIGHT use. They seal the eye shut and keep it moisturized. That is if your current drops don't seal the lid.

Sherry, I have a blocked tear duct in my left eye, and that's exactly how it is. Plus, I get a lot of mucous in the eye, likely from wiping it all the time and irritating it.

It also gets infected from time to time. Trying to prevent that now, because of the antibiotics and how they make me flare. Now if it starts itching around my lashes or has the least bit of soreness at the end of my eye near my nose, I put OTC antibiotic ointmeng all along the lid lines. So far, so good.

My opthalmologist confirmed this was what it was - you can actually feel a little ridge of bone under my tear duct. He also said the surgery is major, because they have to cut a hole in the bone to create a new duct. So I rinse my eye with saline a lot, blot it and go on.

And my eye seals itself at night - I put two drops of saline in it every morning as soon as I get up.

Judy with your blocked tear duct; do you find that your eye always feel moist and every once in a while (no matter what you're doing), what feels like a bucket of tears just well up in your eye?

Use warm/hot compresses over your eye as it will help to loosen the waxy build up that might be blocking the ducts...you could also have an infection where they will most likely rx something like tobradex.
