UC/Pregnancy/High Risk OB-GYN

My husband and I are in the process of trying to conceive, would you suggest a regular OB/GYN or high risk OB/GYN since we have Ulcerative Colitis?  From my understanding any woman with UC and pregnant would be considered high risk.  Pregnant women with UC please shed some knowledge on this topic.

I am 7 weeks pregnant and have not yet been referred to a high risk OB/GYN but I have only had my initial bloodwork done. I have an appointment on Feb. 3rd. I have been with my OB/GYN for years and he knows my history with UC. I am sure that he will refer me to high risk doctor if he feels it is needed. If you already have a regular OB/GYN I would just talk with him/her about your plans to conceive. Good Luck!

My OB said that having UC does not put you at high risk. They just will keep an extra close eye on the baby's growth if you are in a flare.

AMK77 - I think that is what my OB/GYN believes as well and I totally trust him. If UC starts to cause any complications he might refer me to a high risk but otherwise I do not expect him to do so.

Thanks for the feedback ladies-I will stick with the regular OB/GYN and then if there are complications I will head over to high risk.  As long as they closely monitor, that is all that matters to me.

The UC doesnt put you at risk, some of the meds can.
I started seeing a dr before i got pregnant, i was on immuran and another med that can be very dangerous for a baby. And i went to a dr who specializes in medicine and pregnancy, cant remember what its called. Its very important to go ahead and be on prenatal vitamins and to take extra folic acid, helps with the brain development and is most important in the first trimester, often before you even know you are pregnant
I did go to a high risk OB for some appointments. i went to a regular dr for my monthly appointments,but it was adr who could deliver in a nursery with a NICU just incase. Anyway, then i went to high risk some too, the good thing about being classified high risk is you get an ultrasound every month! And you get the 3d ones too!

i went straight to a high risk ob/gyn from the beginniing. i didn't even muck around with another dr.
i wasnt flaring at the time, but ended up in a flare at 9 weeks, so im glad i went straight to him.
why take the chance and get used to one dr then have to change etc...

he does ultrasound every time i go in. no extra charge. to monitor baby.
i am flaring and i have not gained weight.
with a high risk dr, they have the tools to monitor you more closely than a regular one just in case your not getting enuf nutrition or the baby is not growing properly etc

and the meds like pred can cause cleft palate and other meds might have an effect on the fetus. this way it can be watched closely just in case.

my bubby is doing great, all fingers, toes and bits n bobs are there. right size for how far along. but it gives me peace of mind that he checks everytime i go in.
i am miserable as all hell, but the bubby is fine.

and my high risk ob/gyn is in communication wtih my Gastro dr so they can take the best care of us.

My GI told me (because we have discussed the possibility-since I am in a trial, I wanted to know what the plan would be if/when the time comes) that he would want me to see a high risk. I would imagine that is because of the meds, since I have had two c/s and thus will have only c/s, should we have more kids.

However, there aren't high risk practices around my area. The way it goes here is that people go to their regular OB, then are referred if necessary to one of the few high risk docs that have rights at our hospital.

I have a friend in Las Vegas who has UC and has had 3 babies with it, and not seen a high risk. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I did not have a high risk OB despite having UC as well as a prior DVT and Pulmonary Embolism.  However, my OB had a high risk partner in her practice and she reviewed my case with him as well as I would transfer to him if needed.
