I've read this somewhere. Last year I received a flu shot for the second time in a row and shortly after I started having symptoms of UC.
Anyone else think the same?

I'm not sure a dead virus could trigger a flare.  Could it be coincidental?

So I went back and looked at your previous posts, and saw that you started having UC symptoms shortly after the birth of your first child...I did as well. I honestly think that childbirth and all the hormone craziness associated with it, was far more likely to have triggered your first flare than the flu shot did. I am confident that's what triggered my first flare. I had both the H1N1 and seasonal vaccines this year, and didn't even have a blip in my remission.

I never had a flue shot until some years after I had UC.......I had the flu itself after I had UP but before I was diagnosed and thought I would go into the hospital I bled so badly, horrible, horrible flare.....

I agree with fruitgirl. My UC symptoms started shortly after I turned 15 and I imagine hormones are still getting situated at that age.

Fruitgirl- were you given antibiotics at any time during your pregnancy or just before/during delivery. I'm thinking that may have been my trigger as I had high group B strep and was given antibiotics before delivery.

I've tried finding more info on pregnancy being linked to some women's UC. I've heard that getting pregnant could put you into remission? Has anyone heard that?
about the flu shot, I've read that it causes an auto-immune response in your body?
I dunno, I guess I'm just a bit peeved today that they haven't found a cure or cause for this disease yet. I'm sure everyone with different types of diseases gets agrivated about the same thing. This is all in part due the fact that I can't afford my meds right now and my insurance company is being slow on sending refunds and in turn I am experiencing a small flare.
What kind of sense does it make that I have to pay out of my pocket for my meds when they send me a check to reimburse me a week or so later? If they're going to pay for it anyway, why do I have to pay? Grr....
Very frustrated right now.

I've heard both things about pregnancy, it can make you flare, or make you feel better. Just depends on the person I guess?

My first doctor told me he had female patients who had their best remissions while pregnant. So they tried to be pregnant as often as possible!

about 1/3 of women go into remission/get better, 1/3 go into a flare/get worse, and 1/3 have no change in response to pregnancy. So, basically, it's a crapshoot! I don't think I've ever seen stats as to what happens after delivery, but it seems that a lot of women on here who have kids have flared post partum.

kim, yes, I was group b strep positive, so did recieve IV antibiotics during labor only. I honestly don't think they played a role in my UC, though, as I didn't develop symptoms until 4 weeks post partum. If they were going to have played a role, I think the symptoms would have started much sooner. I've also never had diarrhea from antibiotics due to it killing off my gut flora (I do get diarrhea from erythromycin and it's derivatives, but it's an immediate reaction, so not due to gut flora). I wasn't on any other antibiotics my entire pregnancy.

The reason I think it was hormone related is because I also had a big problem with post partum anxiety, which is also a hormone thing. I got crazy stressed and wacked out and was just a mess emotionally. I think all of that put together triggered the flare.

fruitgirl- I am not disagreeing with you. However, antibiotics are fungal toxins, and even those taken as a child can affect one later in life. Fungus can alter gut terrain, cause inflammation, cross the intestinal wall, enter your bloodstream and cause damage throughout your body. I would not discount anything after having taken antibiotics.

I'm convinced that the flu shot I received last year (seasonal) sent me into an uncontrolled flare. Can't prove it, but I am disinclined to test my theory by getting another. A powerful form of aversion therapy.

Fortunately, it does not appear to be a common response.

See, this is why I don't think my pregnancy caused my UC. I started flaring about 5 months after I gave birth. Literally like a week after I received the flu shot, so this is why I feel it was linked.
What do you guys do when you start flaring, eating wise? I've decided to go bland until I can get my medication. I know that as soon as I get my Canasa (since I have left sided colitis) the flare will be over with.

They do put other things in the flu shot to make you immune system go crazy also mercury is also put in the shot as well. It may list it on the paper that came with it. I recommend people avoid getting it and the entire swine flu thing is being investigated in Europe as a money making scam.

I posted on this subject last year sometime.. Same thing happened to me last year..
I too believe that the Flu Shot can cause the symptoms to re-appear. I declined the shot this year and also declined the swine flu jab.
For me it makes sense.. I take medication to weaken my immune system and the flu jab makes it stronger?!!?.. surely, this would boost the chances of battling a flare?.. It did for me anyway, I was in remission for a long period, had a flu jab and the following day/2 I was battling a flare..

Funny you should mention this.

I had a flu shot (regular) last year no problems

This year the H1N1 and within 4 weeks after this BAM flare up and colonoscopy and diagnosis

Now im not saying I didnt have this before unknowingly but this is too mch coincidence for me.

Here is my story. Started having symptoms of UC right after ay went on the pill at 19. First major flare was when I got pregnant with my first child. Second major flare was years later after I tried to go back on the pill to get my cycle regulated. If I don't mess with my "natural" hormones, than I seem to be pretty stable until right before my time of the month. I have a couple of bad days and then I am back to being pretty stable. I am sure hormones have a lot to do with this disease.

This year I had a double "regular" flu shot. My Remicade doctor likes his patients to have a double shot. Then about a month or so later I had the H1N1 shot. While I was driving home from this shot my chest was pounding, my head was spinning and my gut was clenching. Over the next three days my Colitis reared it's ugly head viciously. It was a bad time anyways because of Thanksgiving and all the junk I was eating. My flare is still going on albeit somewhat better. My Remicade doctor dismisses the notion of me having a reaction to the H1N1 shot. He instead, called it "a response". I'm not sure of the difference between a "reaction" and a "response" and he couldn't explain it to me so that I understood it.

I had no choice in getting these innoculations. I work in an elementary school in a lower socio-economic area and children are sent to school sick. My immune system is compromised because I take Remicade and so my doctors insist on these shots.

My flare is every so slowly improving but I really believe that the H1N1 vaccine did play a role in my sudden and severe flareup.

No one knows why Uc is triggered. It's still all speculation to be honest. The common theories are: hormones, genetics, anti-biotic over usage and food poisoning but I imagine there could be other things out there that can trigger Uc.

I believe my Uc was triggered by antibiotic usage and food poisoning. I never had a flu shot until about 10 years ago after I had the flu (horrible agony!). Now when I get them, it doesn't bother my Uc in the least.

I always tell people not to get flu vaccines, but it is your choice. Do some real research before injecting poisons into your body.

Depends on where you are in the world. There is no squalene in the shots here in the US. There are some that have mercury and some that don't. Kim, I developed UC symptoms after the birth of my second child. With my first, I was group b strep positive, had antibiotics, ended up with an emergency c/s, had a terrible incision infection, had more antibiotics-one of which was cipro though. After that I was fine, got pregnant when she was 7 months old, had a repeat c/s, had another infection, more antibiotcs (no cipro this time though), the day after my last dose of abx, I started showing symptoms. I had also been on a lot of abx for sinuses in the year or two before my first was born. My current GI said definitely they played a part in triggering my UC.

As far as the topic at hand-I have had the regular flu shot and noticed no difference. But I actually never had one before having kids-in fact I think the first one I ever had was after my UC, so that wasn't a player for me.
