Hi,

I was diagnosed with UC over 22 years ago, no symptoms no flareups nothing until 5 weeks ago.

I gave up my 40 a day habit in early September of 09, i was so pleased with myself loving being smoke free in 25 years lol

To cut a long story short i spent 6 days in an isolatioin room on a ward with dying elderly patients, i had been diagnosed with severe UC and C Diff infection to top it off!

I'm 42 female now on her own trying to come to terms with an illness i thought would never come back but it has and now i feel as if i am falling to pieces, i can't take the asacol it makes me sick and bloated only the Colifoam gives me some relief not for long though. I am contantly passing wind and passing a liquid containing blood, mucus and some faecal matter life sucks any advice please, or a shoulder.....

I am so sorry to hear that.  I am also 42 but was only diagnosed at 35.  First, congrats on being smoke free.  That is quite an accomplishment.  Second, I know it's bad for you right now but please keep looking ahead and know you got better before and you will again.  I can't take Asacol either.  Maybe your GI doc can try some other meds.  There are alot of people on here that do alternatives too.  For me 6mp and Remicade have worked although I no longer take remicade.  Try to stay positive.  I know it's hard but just know we are all here for you.

I am also in a flare right now, i have had colitis for 15 years. I can not take western medicines as they make me sicker.

When i am flaring i fall to pieces and wonder how i can carry on with life, when i am on the toilet all the time. I get lots of blood and mucus, loose stool and left sided pain. So i really do understand how you feel.

I am now trying a probiotic called VSL 3 and hoping that i get some relief from it. I am really researching an alternative approach with my colitis now, and i am looking into surgery in the future.

Welcome and I am so sorry to hear that your UC has flared up after all those years of no symptoms. I have heard of others who flare once they stop smoking although there are also many who smoke and still have flares. Nicotine patches seem to help some people control flares. I have never tried them myself but since you are an ex-smoker it might help... What medications are you on other than the Colifoam?

When I am in a major flare the only thing that kicks me into remission is a three month course of prednisone. I have been on it twice and both times it helped. I also take Lialda which is similar to asacol but some people can tolerate one and not the other so it might be worth a try...
