Day one of liquid diet/prep - scope on Friday

How does everyone do this????  I am going for my third scope in less than 5 years on Friday.  I am on day one of "clear liquids only" diet and I am miserable!  I can't quiet the hunger and I know that I am going to be like a tall two year old in a couple of hours.  My first scope back in 05 was easy to prepare for because I was so sick and had no appetite to speak of.  This time (and last time) I am on prednisone and my flare seems to be under control.  I am starving!  Any advice on what to eat besides the obvious: consomme, jello, tea, juices........

Thank goodness I am not working tomorrow or someone might get hurt. LOL.

I've only done clear liquids for the one day before the colonoscopy. Wow - you have my sympathy!

My favorite clear liquid is Italian ice (not red, of course.)

OH Man... BCGirl..

I'm so sorry for you... I can relate to the Prednisone hunger pains... I was on Pred all summer and gained 30lbs.. I can't imagine having to do a liquid diet and being on Pred...

I wish I had some advice for you as far as what you can put in your tummy, but it looks like you have it all covered... I think for the next couple days, Jello will be your only real friend since you can SORT of chew it... lol

I just wanted to wish you good luck and if you come up with any other ideas, let us know because I'm probably going to have a Colonoscopy in the next month or so.... EEK...

What is Italian Ice? 

I think my GI goes a bit overboard with this diet and prep thing.  I can't eat any solid food or dairy today or tomorrow.  I have to drink a full bottle of citro mag this afternoon and then 4 litres of the PEG solution tomorrow afternoon.  My appointment is for 8am Friday morning so I won't be able to eat until Friday afternoon sometime after they release me from the hospital.  By then I will be so miserable that I probably won't want to eat.  I have already warned my husband as this will be the first time that he will be there for this. 

I am trying to fill up on liquids but it's not working and all I am doing is running to the bathroom every 1/2 hour.........

And yes, jello is it's own food group for the next two days.  I have five different flavours in my fridge already.  Peach is not good.  LOL. 

Too bad I can't make jello shooters to get myself through the next  couple of days tongue

Wow - well, one thing you know for sure is that you'll be REALLY cleaned out and the doc will get a very clear look at what's going on there!!

Italian ice is.... basically frozen juice, sometimes sold at ice cream places in the US, or in packages at the grocery store. A little like a popsicle in a cup, but with clightly better flavors.......

Go for that jello!

I had my colonoscopy today and boy was i dehydrated, once the IV went in it was like life entering my veins!!

This was my first one and I used Pico salax.........taste was ok and it was only 8oz followed by 2 pints of liquid.

How on earth do you drink 4 litres of anything???

Diet was Jello, tea, gatorade and water........ive never felt so hungry!!! now its over I cant seem to handle food!!

I don't do the liquid diet and only do the gallon prep because I can eat until noon the day of the prep. I can't be without solid food and consume low fibre and then "liquid" salt or sugar for 3 days before.

I've not done the pico salex, however, but if it requires a day of salt/sugar liquids...ugh. I'll pass.

I had a scope yesterday and did the liquid diet on Monday.   I did the Osmoprep tablets.  Not so bad.  I was able to drink Ensure which did help with me feeling so hungry.

I keep hearing about Pico Salex and "pills" that people take.  What is different about them from what I am drinking?  Why is my GI torturing me?  LOL.  I just got home after working all day with no food and I am not feeling so peppy.  Drank a whole bottle of Citro Mag and am waiting for the storm to hit.  Am trying to settle my stomach with some beef consomme but I know it's going to be a long night tonight and a long day tomorrow.  I am dreading what is going to happen to my system when I can finally eat solid food again on Friday afternoon.......

And as for the four litres of PEG, you are supposed to drink 8oz every 20 minutes until the four litres is finished or when you are passing only clear liquid.  I figure if I am very strict and don't cheat on my liquid diet, I should pass clear fluid pretty quickly after starting the solution.  I hope I don't have to drink all four litres or I will be up all night tomorrow night.......

Osmoprep is the one I use now and is 100x better than using that phospho soda. Here's the link to osmoprep if you haven't heard of it

You have my sympathy- I am due for the big scope in a month. My hunger during the prep gets so nasty that I get a severe, incapacitating hunger headache to the point of nausea, which will then cause me to start throwing up the prep... So I have to end up taking tylenols on an empty (or at least clear broth line only) stomach to continue. The scope itself- at least with the IV pain meds- is a cakewalk vs the prep for me. But I stick with the GoLitely type preps because in theory they are gentlest on the gut- no severe cramps.

The gallon prep (PEG lavage) is to be mixed and then put in the fridge the morning of or the night before.

It should be taken in an 8oz glass every 10 - 15 minutes. I have a process that goes quickly:

-fill the first glass, set the timer for 10 minutes

-use a straw and place it into the mouth as far back as you can to take in the liquid quickly.

-fill the next glassful

- set timer for 10 minutes

-continue process until the last glass

-out of spite, throw it out...lol.

I use the one with absolutely NO flavour that's in the powder already nor do I add flavour to it.

     Wow, never knew there were so darn many preps!!  I never heard of pico salex.  Is that anything like Miralax?  I just stick to the Nulitely.  I am used to it..lol.  Well, if one ever can get USED to a prep for a colonoscopy.

     The instructions I have say that I can eat a "light" breakfast the day I begin the prep.  But because I don't relish drinking that gallon jug, I stay on a liquid diet for a full day before starting the prep.  It makes it mush easier and I only have to drink about 1/3 of the jug before evacuating clear liquid.

Well I am now an hour and a half into the 4 litres.  I hold my breath and chug a coffee mug of it as quickly as I can and then while still holding my breath, I take a mouthful of gingerale to chase it down.  I am freezing cold and so hungry!  I am not sure if it's every ten minutes that I am drinking it, but close enough.  I have been on clear fluids for almost 48 hours now so I don't imagine that I will need to drink all 4 litres of the stuff.

I had to travel for this scope so I am in a motel room while doing this.  Thank goodness for wireless internet. LOL.  On my way here today, my husband and I stopped at Tim Hortons at lunch time.  We ordered coffees and then I asked if I could get "just soup broth" from the Italian Wedding soup.  Believe it or not, they denied my request!!!!  My husband was going to order lunch there, too but we left with just our coffees.  I couldn't believe it!

When i used my pico salax I drank it room temp as well as the follow up water as I think drinking ice cold liquid would lower your core temperature down too much and make you feel even more like crap.

I guess with the stuff youre on it has to be cold?

It says to refrigerate this stuff so that it tastes better......I don't know how that is possible!  However, the fridge in this motel room is too small for the jug so it is warming up.  I think I will be cold no matter what the temp of this crap....

I have already emailed Tim Hortons about today.  I am still miffed about it.  LOL.

The Salofalk supps have never caused this purple colour before........

thats why I love the osmoprep pills...well not love it but it has no taste but you will FILL up on the amount of water you need to drink in the hour that you have to take the pills. I thought I was going to burst by the end
