Im new to this site but reading many of your stories have me optimostic for hope. I was diagnosed with Ulceritive proctitis and severe colitis 9/2009 and have only got worse since. I have been on apriso from the start and it has seemed to do nothing to help. I was recently prescribed hydrocortizone enemas for two weeks which also did nothing. I went to the doc again last week and he thinks i have a colon infection so he prescribed me a med called metronidazole to clear it up and again it doesnt seem to be helping. Im having 8-10 bm's per day and most of the time the majority of what comes out is blood and mucos. I am getting desperate for some relief from the bleeding and soreness i have on my bottom. Just wanted to get others suggestions and thoughts on how i may be able to get this under control. Thanks for everyones help

hi..welcome to the forum! I hope your doc did stool samples rather than assuming you had an infection.
You should, however, be on a rectal retention medication....I'd suggest Rowasa enemas (that you hold in overnight).
You should also consider probiotics and a fibre supplement.
I hope you start to feel better soon.

Ugh, my first flare they thought I had c. diff and gave me metronidazole. Made me sooooo dizzy.
Anyway...has your doc considered oral steriods? Also like quincy said, rowasa might help too. If not, maybe it's time to move onto the bigger guns, like 6-mp.

hi i would get your doc to try steroids, i have the same severe pan colitis, it started in the rectum .. proctitis .... the pain was soooo bad I had to sit on a hot water bottle! - which i would recommend! i have just been taken off 6mp cos of side effects.... I want to try the pred again as it helped the first time ! When I was really bad I drank juices .. carrot celery and spinich which helped. Hope you get some relief !

I'd say no to steroids until other meds have been tried....

Actually, I hate to disagree with Heather, but a short course of prednisone could help before going on to the "bigger guns". The antibiotic you are on, Flagyl...didn't really help me either.
Try to stick to a low residue diet too.

I notice a lot of people are on probiotis. Does the doctor have to prescribe something strong enough to help or can i just go with yogurts or something else with probiotics?

Yogurt isn't enough to support good intestinal flora in my opinion, besides...many are lactose intolerant and it can cause much discomfort.
Eat yogurt because you want some...not necessarily for its probiotics.
you should find a good probiotic brand with fairly high and different strains of probiotics in it.
A few on here use VSL#3...I've never used it.

I got UC symptoms when I was pregnant(about
4-5 months) I had my daughter in June 2008. I got really bad and I was finally diagnosed with severe UC throughout my whole colon. I was put on Asacol(allergic), and imuran(allergic), the only thing that helped was the prednisone. I was on it for over 5 months, it worked great(even when to Chicago for a weekend), but it made me gain 50 pounds and made me Crazy(my pour hubby). I then got put on Remicade. It was hard for me to go on the remi because I was just diagnosed with the diesese. Then all of a sudden I'm on the highest drug there is. Well, remi has worked wonders for me. I'm scared of the side effects and I know because my dieses is so bad I will most likely need surgery. But i'm hoping this works for awhile. I would go on the steriods (I went on it for a month 20mg, and it worked until I went off and within a week I was having issues, then I was put on it for 5 months), this is the only thing that worked until my remi kicked in. I know this sucks and I'm sorry you have to go through this. It takes some getting use to. I wish you the best of luck!!

Suggestion for the sore bum... Use moistened wipes. My son has no problems with pain, even if he goes 10-20 x's per day. cheapo walmart flushable wipes. what a godsend for flares and for everyday:)
