I have wondered whether UC is a result of modern food, modern stress or what. I just ran across this article (can't read the whole thing without subscrib.) that says there are references to UC symptoms in 640 BC to 170 AD. So that's interesting.

UC was given a specific diagnosis in 1875. Crohn's was described in 1859 but not recognized as a separate entity until the 1950's.

I think one of the biggest changes is that people used to die from it. My MD told me that which was a big shock to me. I've always thought "Well at least it isn't cancer. I won't die from it" which turns out to be false.

     My paternal grandmother died from "cancer of the rectum", so was explained to me.  Now, I am not so sure.  Her symptoms were the same as mine....diarrhea, rectal bleeding.  She never went to a regular doctor, only chiropractors.  She lived with us and died in 1952 at the age of 65.  I am 63 now and was diagnosed at 52.  Back in the 50's no one talked much about bowel disease.

thanks Heather(quincy) for telling me how to edit. I also removed the two redundant posts.

I don't know what the cost is to read the article but its one of the few I found giving any history of UC.
I also looked up when penicillin was "discovered" through another google search which was very interesting. I was wondering if UC rapidly increased after more antibiotic use. I don't have the answer to that. (I'm not in the medical field just curious).
Although technically discovered in the late 1800's it was 1928 when it was isolated but not until the 1940's was it used widely.

So many people associate antibiotics with the onset of UC I wonder if there has been any study to test that theory.
Or since there are reports of UC in very early times are we just living longer with better medical care so we are identifying more people with UC that would have died if they lived in earlier times?

I'm just trying to learn more so I don't have bad information in my head like: modern food is the reason I got UC. Maybe it contributed but ancient Rome had UC reports too and they ate real food.

It doesn't surprise me at all that it's noted to be around for that longer (it's probably even longer) there is a very strong genetic link to IBD afterall.
