Accutane- could it be?

I've never heard of this before. Isn't that a fairly common drug?

Peety (another member on here) is positive her UC was caused by Accutane use.

My son who took Accutane in his late teens recently had the three stage jpouch due to UC.  One day, he was perfectly healthy, on no meds at all and suddenly the next day he work up with terrible UC. Because it came so out of the blue we assumed he had food poisoning. but it attacked with a vengeance and never let up. He suffered terribly and finally had to go with the surgery. So, yes, maybe it is possible that there is a link here to the Accutane.. there is absolutely no genetic link in our family to any kind of bowel disease. He has been approached by several people who have told him he should look into this issue with Roche very closely. It will never make this huge life change any different for him, but maybe it will help him understand how this all happened. Don't know how you can put a monetary value on a colon, but you sure realize how valuable it is when it's gone! I am curious as to how many people on this site have ever taken Accutuane.

You have to be genetically programmed to get UC so those of us with UC are born with the gene. So while Accutane is implemented in UC, it's only implemented as a trigger. Those that had their first flare after taking Accutane would have had their first flare eventually. That being said, because we have the gene does not make UC necessarily a hereditary disease. In some families it is hereditary, in others, like mine, it has not shown to be.

maybe, but I'm not too sure. I personally think it can be a number of things. I have no history of UC in my family what so ever. Personally I think it has a lot to do with foods. The foods here have so many additives and such, i think that that may be a huge cause of it. Also perhaps some immunizations people had as children could have something to do with it.

But if it's ONLY environment that causes it, then you'd think that my sister, who was raised in the same environment (ie, ate the same food and had the same immunizations) as I did would also have it. But she doesn't. I'm the only person in my family who has UC. Even though I am, I still fully believe that there's a genetic foul-up at the base of this, with an environmental trigger that starts the symptoms (which is what sue was saying, I think). If you understand how genetics work, you'll see that it's easily possible for a person to have a genetically-linked disorder that nobody else in the family does.

Your absolutely correct, I wish more studies would be done on it!

I used Accutane as well before my UC developed.
