Just saw a commercial....

The commercial was a lawyer trying to get people who have use Accutane. The commercial went on to say that this drug gives you IBD (Chron's, Ulcerative Colitis.) I never thought that they'd find some drug that would cause this nasty disease.

Yeah, you'll see a lot of people on here have accutane and UC in common. Wikipedia said that there have already been cases that have gone to court and there are 425 cases pending. Obviously you can't believe everything wiki says but it's definitely out there.

I never used Accutane but I had acne as a teen, mostly on my back though. I used a prescription strength liquid (Clindamyacin) and it cleared up after 3 months. Never had to use an acne med again.

But same here, I've heard of the Accutane/IBD connection as well. I think it's only one possibility of what causes Uc. That is what makes having this so frustrating is because there are soooo many different factors.

I had acne but never used accutane...I believe I was put on doxycycline (or tetracyclin). And I think benzocaine creme. I had cystic acne which was really painful.

Both clindamyacin and tetrocycline are known to cause antibiotic-associated colitis. I've taken both, for many years.

I don't see how any medicine can cause UC though. I've been told by experts who are studying the role that genetics plays in UC that UC is colitis when all external factors have been ruled out. So accutane can cause colitis but not UC. For all purposes, doctors probably see the same thing under the scope when they look at the colon; so many people who have colitis due to haven taken accutane or antibiotics sometime in their past are probably being misdiagnosed as having UC.
