I swear, we need a new forum for "Weird medical things that happen to HW members."


This time it's my nose. It is swollen to twice its normal size and red as a cherry. If anyone has a sleigh and needs a navigator...



Going to see the PA in a few minutes, I'm sure this will mean antibiotics yet again. I swear, the Imuran and Remi never affected my incidence of infections, but ever since my diabetes became worse, it's been one thing after another!

Yikes! Too bad it's not Christmas--you might be able to pick up a part-time job if it were!
(sorry, just trying to make you laugh!)
Anyway, I hope your PCP figures out what's going on and that the treatment doesn't involve antibiotics.

oh wow Judy....that doesn't sound good. Yes, I laughed at the navigator position...

Or you can wear clown make-up and take a part time job ;) Just teasing you. I know about the wonderful and weird medical things that many of us get and it is not fun to say the least! Let us know what the PA has to say about it ok?

I was thinking of taking up clowning....

By the time I got there, my left cheek was starting to turn red and swell. As she watched it increase, the PA went out to call my doc. Of course I have cellulitis, and of course I have to take abx. A shot in the office and cipro at home. (I refused keflex)

Just to make my day complete, I ran into my doctor on the way out. He stopped me to look at it, then told me to call if it got any worse over the weekend, because it it does he's going to put me in the hospital on IV antibiotics.

I think that scared my sphincter so much I may not need to go to the bathroom for a couple of days!

     You guys gave me a chuckle in my otherwise depressing day!  Judy, I hope they find out what is causing this and are able to help you.  My friend's daughter has had Type I diabetes since she was eight years old, she is now 34 and pregnant with her second child.  Boy, has that girl ever been through the mill with diabetic consequences during her lifetime!!!

My nose swelled once! It was the weirdest thing. I was on pred at the time.....I don't remember if I was put on antibiotics, but I do remember being instructed to apply bacitracin to the inside of my nose with a q-tip, and my nose hurt so much!!
I hopw it gets better soon and with no negative effects of the antibiotics.

Oh, rats! Sorry to read that you developed cellulitis, Judy, & need Cipro to treat it. It may be due to your suppressed immune system, no? KColwell24 & Elephant Pipe have recently posted about getting fungal rashes while on Imuran or 6MP-- so maybe your Rudolph nose resulted from Remi over time. Thank you, everyone. I'm still in a watchful waiting mode. I think the swelling in my cheek is increasing slightly, but the nose seems a bit less swollen. I don't have fever, so I'm going to wait until after my third dose of cipro unless something extreme happens.

Old Hat, I tend to think this is related to my type II diabetes, actually. My blood sugars started running higher just a few months ago, and I had to start on medication.

I have to keep my sense of humor. If I didn't laugh I'd have to cry, and that would make my eye swell.

Wow, Judy, what a smelly deal.

I'm seriously impressed with how well you're handling it though.  Sometimes seeing someone else hang in there like you are gives me that kick in the butt I need to get over my crybabyitis.

So now, after 48 hours on antibiotics, my nose is down to normal size but my left cheek is swollen and the color of a strawberry. I'm thinking I might pack a few things to take with me when I go to the doctor's office tomorrow. :(

oh no....good some has receded (so much for that job prospect!), but it sounds serious still. You think you'll be admitted I'm assuming. You're acting quickly on it...hope it can be resolved quickly.

So the cellulitis is resolving and I'm down to a red, scaley patch on my cheek. Of course I have D and my abdomen hurts really bad from the antibiotics. No signs of bacterial infection, and I'm taking massive amounts of both probiotic yeast and bacteria. I'm sure when I'm done with the abx I'll have to break out my emergency supply of proctofoam to get things quieted down.

Oh, and there are now officially no antibiotics I can tolerate without pain and suffering.

That sucks, Judy, that all abx give you trouble. :( But I'm glad your face is getting better!

I still don't know what abx I can take. Back when I had my ear infection, I found that I can't tolerate Z-packs (I'm one of those who gets the immediate, non-gut-bacteria-related diarrhea from it). I got the Rx for that on a Friday, and when I called in on Saturday, the stupid on-call doc Rx'ed Augmentin (after I'd explained I wanted something easy on the gut), but I didn't realize that's what it was until my husband got home from the pharmacy with it. I took that for three days, and started getting diarrhea...so my GP said to just quit, since most ear infections are wussy and it was probably gone. So I don't know if I can take more mild abx like amoxicillin.

And sorry, I've just totally hijacked you post!

I don't think I'd even try Amoxicillin. It's notorious for causing diarrhea, even in healthy people.

I used to be able to take Cipro and Azithromycin; both have been nightmares the last two times. I can get through the diarrhea, it's just the terrible low abdominal pain they give me.
