How to find hospital ratings....

     Waiting for a call back from my GI doctor, which will probably be in a few hours.  In the meantime I am looking for a hospital with a good rating.  The colorectal surgeon I saw a few years ago is affiliated with Cooper Hosp in Camden NJ which received a 2 out of a 4 rating.  I used to work there years ago..lol.  My friend's husband was a patient there, he suffered with Lymphoma before passing, and she said she wouldn't send a dog there..gulp.

     How would I find the rating of Thomas Jefferson Univ Hosp in Philly...I tried their site but having no success.  How about Univ of PA Hospital.  My husband worked for Temple Univ Hospital and said it was filthy whenever he went over there to repair equipment...ugh....this is driving me nuts.

Hey Christine; I don't know about their GI department at UOP, but both my in laws had heart valve surgeries there and they were excellent; both of my in-laws received excellent care, and it was clean and the staff was wonderful. Hope this helps. ps, my hubby and in-laws rave about UOP.

     Thank you soooo much Carol.  This puts my mind at ease.  Still waiting for the call back from my GI doctor.  The GI specialist he sent me to last Sept is affiliated with the Univ of PA hospital but I don't want to keep trying these meds.  Maybe the GI at the Univ of PA can refer me to a good colorectal surgeon there.  I feel so bad for my husband, he is sooo worried and I know he hates driving over to Philly but if that is where the best medical options are I am sure he wants that for me.

I'm glad to try and help put your mind at ease. I know your husband is worried, but I'm sure him knowing you will have the best care possible and on the road to being healthy again will put his mind at ease as well. Check to see if the University has some sort of lodging nearby that your husband can stay in while you are in the hospital. Some of the large hospitals have reduced cost housing for relatives of patients.

Christine, I know the hospital is important but I almost think it's more important to find a great surgeon. I would want someone who has done of ton of these surgeries and not a handful of them. I would hop on a plane and travel to where ever I needed to go to have my operation performed by the best. And we're not wealthy. It would be worth it, IMO. I have a relative who had a colostomy performed by a small-town surgeon and she's still having major complications decades later. You want someone from the "A" team, not the B team, C team, etc. I learned my lesson when I picked an OB out of the phone book when we moved to a new city. I think you lower your chances of complications by having a really good surgeon. Fortunately, we live within driving distance to the Cleveland Clinic so that's where I would go if I opt for surgery.

SG....how does one pick the team of either A, B or C? How would you know that info?

I think the best way to find a good surgeon/hospital is by personal recommendations. The list of doctors I recommended to you all came highly recommended by their patients for colorectal surgery. A hospital ratings doesn't mean much to me. I'd much rather know that I was in good hands with the surgeon. A good surgeon is not going to practice in a bad hospital?

     I heard wonderful reports about the Cleveland and Mayo Clinics.  Unfortunately, we are at least a ten hour drive from Cleveland.  We were there once and it was closed....only kiddin.  But we did visit the city about fifteen years ago.

     Still waiting on that call from my GI doctor.  Maybe he is looking into what colorectal surgeon to send me to.  When he mentioned surgery to me a few weeks ago, he did say he wouldn't send me to just anybody, that the surgeon would have to be top notch.

     I took a hydrocodone for this pain.  It is kicking in...whew.

     You people are all so wonderful.....*hugs* to all of you for your support.

Okay, here's the truth. You do not need to travel to the Mayo, the Cleveland Clinic or Johns Hopkins in order to see a very good surgeon. There are lots of great options close to where you live; if there weren't I'd be the first to recommend you travel. I had to travel 2 hours to see one of the best colorectal surgeons in the country. It was worth it to me rather than to turn my care over to a local CR surgeon with limited experience. I live in a small town, the closest metro area is 2 hours away. If your opting for an ostomy it's fairly standard surgery and easy for a good CR surgeon to manage.

Oh Christine~!

I am so sorry to hear that you aren't feeling well, but was glad to hear the pain med is kicking in... I am on the west coast, so I can't suggest any hospitals or anything, I just wanted you to know that I am here and I care :) I am wishing you healing thoughts, whether it's on your own, or by a surgeon.. either way, you need to feel better!!
