I am now on my 19th day of Cipro trying to rid myself of the Salmonella infection but I have to say that this drug is terrible. The side effects of the headaches, diarrhea, loss of appetite, fatigue and lower back pain have been absolutely draining! Due to me not eating I have lost 9 pounds over the last 19 days. I spoke to my doctor about these side effects yesterday and he believes it's possible I now have a C Difficile infection which I've had in the past from antibiotics. The side effects of that are almost identical to the side effects of the Cipro. So now I don't know if what I'm experiencing are the side effects of the Cipro, symptoms of the C Difficile or my colitis flaring or even a combination of all 3. If I do have the C Diff I'm sure a treatment of Flagyl will soon follow. I'm just ready to get this stuff out of my body but as of now have another 11 days left of the Cipro treatment.

man that sucks. What a rotten break getting salmonella. Yeah them anti-biotics will mess you up, try and find a good quality pro-biotic and take them, maybe it will help.

Some people buy that VSL3, very expensive but very strong dosage of pro-biotics. Acidpholis pearls, Nature's Way Primadophilus Reuteri, lesser expensive ones.

I just finished a ten-day course of cipro on Sunday. I had cellulitis in my face, and they were afraid it was going to infect my eyes or my brain. I feel lucky to have survived the treatment, which put me into a full-blown mini-flare. I was taking 90 billion units of probiotics and still had diarrhea, cramping, the works. Next time I'll take the hospital/IV antibiotics route that was offered. I just hate hospitals!

If you're female, get some Diflucan to take when you finish the abx - it will help with any yeast. And I started rectal meds the day I finished the cipro. I'm starting to feel better now, but still white-knuckle every time I have to go to the bathroom.

Stinks when the cure is worse than the disease. I hope you feel better soon, and that the nasty salmonella goes far, far away.

nope not a female and I have been taking VSL3 while on the Cipro...been taking one packet a day but it appears the cipro is winning at this point. I'm scheduled to see my GI next week for my normal checkup so I'm going to try and see if he can write a prescription for the VSL :crosses fingers: To be honest I hope it's a C Diff infection and not my colitis that's getting worse that's causing these symptoms for I know we can get rid of the C Diff fairly quickly.

I hope to get all this behind me soon...this has been the worst year of my life so far...between two painful hemorrhoid surgeries, two separate salmonella infections, the countless side effects and this October will be the two year mark of this mild flare I've been dealing with. I've been on and off prednisone trying to deal wtih it (currently off), still on 6MP and Colazal and Rowasa. It's hard to focus on the colitis when I have these other infections in my body...I want those out so I can deal with my colitis and figure out something to get it under control. It's been so long since I've been in remission I forgot what it's like...

I had such a horrible reaction to Cipro when I took it over 10 years ago as a foot infection precaution that it is on my "allergic" list and I am not allergic to any other antibiotics. I had D, vomiting, nausea, the whole patootie including lying on the bathroom floor head in toilet for what seemed most of the night.

Adding insult to injury was the cost (high deductible meant I paid for the Rx). One capsule cost almost $80 since I couldn't take any more.

I try and remember to ask for ONE pill to test before filling the Rx when it's something new but of course I forget. Never happened with anything since then (except food).

Best wishes on your recovery. Pretty bad when the cure hurts more.

I feel your pain with the nausea...thankfully I have not had any vomiting but definitely felt very sick to my stomach...I have this constant feeling like there is a 10lb weight resting on my abdomen

Count me as a cipro hater too! I had to take a 10 treatment; didn't feel bad while on it but had a major Cipro hangover when I got off of it which included general malaise and flu-like symptoms. Next time I will ask for Flagyl which I tolerate better.

Feel better soon, c-diff can be a bear and it's definitely not fun when one has UC!

I'm sure I'll be given Flagyl soon if I test positive for the C Diff...unfortunately for the Salmonella there really is only one class of antibiotics to take to get rid of it which is fluoroquinolone. It was mentioned to me that I would be given Cipro or Levaquin...both with virtually the same side effects, blah!

Really? Cipro is one of the few antibiotics I can tolerate...and it does a great job at clearing up the UTIs I seem to get frequently.

UGH-I hate cipro also. I was on it for 2 weeks after my oldest was born and it was brutal!!! I felt horrible the entire time I was on it (this was all pre-UC for me, so thankfully I didn't have that aspect to deal with at the time).

It definitely did the job, but it was a looooong two weeks being on that stuff. Helped me get back to pre-baby weight fast though, lol! I couldn't eat much of anything, I felt like such utter crap.

that's exactly what I feel like, utter crap. I can barely eat anything for once I start, I just feel like hell and lose my appetite. My dinner last night consisted of 5 spoonfulls of brown rice and water...that is all I felt like eating. I do get hungry and feel like I can eat and eat but after a couple bites I push my plate away.

I agree-- having needed to take it yrs back when I got a staph infection while on hydrocortisone for UC. It was a vicious circle because my UC then got worse & required a course of Pred. Do you know the source(s) of the salmonella? That's definitely worth analyzing-- so that you can hopefully avoid food contamination in the future. Good luck with your recovery! It's o.k. to just nibble here & there on nutritious tidbits 'til your appetite picks up, but be sure to keep yourself well-hydrated. / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

My PCP took one look at my rash, which is rapidly proceding to become eczema, and officially declared me allergic to Cipro.

it was believed that the source of my salmonealla was my pet reptiles...I had 6 snakes and two bearded dragons. I have since found new homes for my snakes but at this point could not bear to part with my lizards. If it was from any of my repitles, I figure it would be much easier to be more "sanitary" with one cage instead of 7. Plus, if it's not proven that it is my reptiles I would not want to get rid of them as they were birthday presents. All my salmonella infections were different "serotypes" which means they were all different infections. If they were all the same type they would be looking at me as a carrier and would remove my gall bladder.
