Colonoscopy Prep

Hi guys,

I have to get a colonoscopy next week and have a very sensitive stomach.  I was wondering what you think the least "gross" drink prep is?

Also, does anyone know if colonics work before a colonoscopy?  I heard of people doing it and then my doctor said he never heard of people doing that.  I'm really trying to avoid a drink!

I've never heard of using a colonic, I think the docs want you good and cleaned out so you'll probably have to do an oral one.  I've only had one colonoscopy and I used the magnesium citrate drink...lemon flavor.  I put it in a glass over ice and drank it steadily...didn't chug, I was afraid it would make me nauseous.  It wasn't terrible really and I don't do well with drinking gross stuff either.  I just drank it down and went and sat and relaxed while it kicked in.

Meh, I had to drink halflytely which didn't "taste" bad but the texture of the drink made me gag. I felt like drinking soppy water with some kind of weird lime flavor (thats the "flavor packet" i choose)
I choked it down, then tried drinking it mixed with ginger ale, which helped but then it tasted like soppy ginger ale, rofl.
about 3/4th of the way done I found out if you mix each glass with one of those individual gatorate packets (I used grape flavor) that it helps ALOT, and actually doesn't taste bad.
Although, when I went to the bathroom it was blue. :D

I've heard good things about the new pill prep called "Osmoprep." I haven't tried it and my doctor gave me Movi-prep for my last scope a few weeks ago. The Movi-prep made me throw up both batches. I also keep hearing about people doing a Miralax + gatorade prep but I'm not sure of the specifics. So, those two alternatives might be worth asking about. Oh, and one more thing your doctor might be able to give you something to quell the nausea. Good luck with prep and scope!

I heard Mirilax and Gateorade is not bad at all. Does anyone know what the results are like for it?

You might want to ask your doc and see if you can do the Miralax prep. Of course you might have to eat real light a few days before if you were doing that kind of prep since it's very slow acting. The reason the docs prefer the other "nasty" preps is that is works very quickly. On my last scope I did the Moviprep which wasn't too bad. I didn't add the flavor packs and I was able to just use the first liter and be cleaned out.

Ugh, the Osmoprep has been black listed by the FDA because it has been shown to possibly cause kidney damage.

I've had 24 colonoscopies, with Go litely, half litely, fleets phospha soda.... and I think miralax was the easiest. I didn't mix it with gatorade, I just used a flavored water packet (like crystal light).
It really was not bad at all.

I used Miralax twice - first with gaterade and then powerade.  The NP told me the reason they want you to mix it with gaterade or powerade is to replace the electrolytes you lose.  I drank about 2/3 of it and started throwing up so quit - each time I was cleaned out enough.  Eating really light for a couple days helps!

the miralax was good for my prep, it didn't bother my tummy at all.

Everyone is different though :P hope yours goes well! the prep is the worst part lol

I've only ever done the Miralax prep. I like that it was tasteless. That's the about the only part I liked about it...

That is what I used last year and it was by far the best prep I have ever endured. I get to experience the same prep in a couple of weeks again!

As for getting things cleaned out, it appears to do a very good job. My prep also requires the use of bisacodyl tablets and that tasty magnesium citrate.

the easiest for me has been the Magnesium citrate drink lemon flavor. its only 10oz and doesnt taste all that bad. Deep breath, chug, exhale through your mouth. try not to let any of the air escape through your nose. My last one my GI prescribed a gallon jug called Gravilyte which was rediculous the ammount was absurd and even tho I mixed it with gatorade instead of water the texture was completely changed.

I told my doctor I vomited the Miralax and gateroade first time.  He said to stop taking it when my stool was just like water - with no "pieces".  I did both times and was cleaned out!

Just remember that whatever prep you use, if you add a flavored Crystal light or similar mix, that you use a light colored one, not one with red dyes in it. I used a white/yellow lemonade mix and was fine but a friend of mine used a pink lemonade one and did not have a good colonoscopy because the dyes affected the view of the colon. She had to do one two days later after a diet of clear liquids to flush the dye away ... she ended up losing about 12 pounds in a week simply because she chose the wrong flavor mix. Yikes!
