Hi Cathy
Thanks for thinking of us. Well, the appointment went really well. Dr. Griffiths was very
open minded about
trying alternatives and took a whatever works approach. She was with a visiting GI from the Netherlands who was very enthusiastic about
us trying dietary means for treating Stella and said that they took a much less aggressive approach with IBD treatment where she came from. We brought an article with us from Columbia University where they are treating Crohn's with diet and neutraceuticals with success (because we were nervous!) and they took copies of it and were keen to look it over. Stella had grown a lot gained weight so they were happy. Her blood work was very good (ESR of 7) so all looked good. Two days later, FLARE. We emailed Dr. Griffiths and though she was out of town on Good Friday, she remained in touch with us by email and says she is happy for us to continue emailing her when needed. Of course we don't want to abuse this but it means a lot to us. Stella is now on sulfasalazine (as well as many supps) but she is
open to discussing new treatments with us (ie. fecal transplant etc). She was in no way dismissive or condescending, answered all of our questions, addressed our concerns, spoke to us about
everything from naltrexone to plasma aphoresis. I am so thankful that we were able make the switch. If we were with our previous GIs in Ottawa, I would have been panicking but I feel calmer than before because I know she has the best care and a doctor who has her best interests in mind and who and actually knows what she's talking about
. It's a relief not to have to second guess the dr. all the time. Her previous GIs wanted her on imuran months ago, warned us against probiotics, told us not to experiment with diet etc. and hadn't heard of something like aphoresis. We're parked in Toronto for a while since we might have to take her in. I'm still looking at alternatives/compliments as I believe that will be a key for us and I'm thankful that I can discuss this with our GI. How's Dillon? I've been following your posts, I hope he continues to get better quickly
Sherry
