I just had a colonoscopy this afternoon and thank GOD it's over!  GI found some irritation at the end of my colon (I've recently been finding blood after 2 years of remission) and prescribed some Cortifoam that I start tomorrow.  Anyways, a few minutes ago I let out gas and some, er, unpleasant stuff came out.  This only happened when my UC symptoms were bad and now I'm worried.  Did anyone experience this after a colonoscopy or know if it's common?

I'd keep an eye on it but wouldn't worry too much, it's probably irritated from all the prep and the scope and the enemas should help anyways =)

Yes, normal. I'm sure he took lots of biopsies. I have bleeding for up to 4 days afterward.

You're flaring a bit at the low rectum...hope the rectal meds get you feeling better soon.

What you are experiencing is what we know as "sharting"...or maybe since you had no stool and had bloody stuff, it could be called "blarting".

If you get worse, call the doc. Are you not on any oral meds such as asacol?

When do you go back for your biopsy results?

Sounds fairly "normal".  How often will you be using the Cortifoam.  My new GI doc prescribed Cortifoam followed by an Anusol suppository for my low rectal proctitis.  This was last Fall.  I used both three times a day for a few days, then 2 times a day until I felt I was nearly normal - no blood/mucous stools - then once a day, etc.  I now use it about once or twice a week - when I feel irritation.  Good luck!

That happened to me after I got home after my colonoscopy, and it really freaked me out. No one at the hospital told me it was a possibility. I think if they had at least warned me it wouldn't have been so bad. If I remember correctly it happened once without me making it to the bathroom (I thought I just had to pass gas but it was definitely a "shart"), and then once or twice more (but after the first surprise I wasn't going to chance any other "gas passes" without being on the toilet. Thanks guys! I'll be taking the Cortifoam 2x a day for a month (although he said I should see results in about 4-5 days?) I'm currently on Remicade and have been in remission for about 2 years and then I felt a flare coming on. I went to my GI and he said I should get a colonoscopy since I was due anyways and he could get a better look. He said it was really just my lower colon/rectal area that was irritated and thinks the Cortifoam should help. Fingers crossed!

Ahh almost 4 days post colonoscopy and I'm still sharting, unable to pass a stool since then, have stomach pain, and can hear my stomach rumble like crazy after I eat. My cortifoam has helped the bleeding but should this still be going on almost 4 days after?? I feel like the colonoscopy has made my symptoms even worse!

Yes, it is possible that your symptoms are worse. The biopsies will produce bleeding as well....4 days is usually tops for me regarding that...then nothing.

The cortifoam should have given you more relief....but maybe you don't need twice a day?

You wouldn't have irritation, I'd say it would be inflammation.

Call your doctor and tell him those are the symptoms you're having. Maybe using another enema such as a mesalamine one would help? As well, maybe an oral one such as Asacol.

Do call the doctor for sure.

GI told me to take Colace 2x a day to help make a BM. Hope this works!

It's a stool softener....I took that the first 2 years when I had symptoms as you do. Make sure your intake of food is enough.

Keep us posted as to how you're dong.
