I had my first colonoscopy yesterday (Friday).  I was diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis.  Isn't this ulcerative colitis?  I'm thinking that the term "proctitis" is defining the location of the problem in my colon.

My doctor wrote me a script for Canasa suppositories.  I'm supposed to put one in tonight, but I'm scared.  I am petrified that I'm going to have a bad reaction.  I don't think I can handle anything else happening to me in that area right now. 

Has anyone had any experience they could share about this particular drug?  I'm not opposed to inserting a suppository, I just don't want some freaky reaction.

I was diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis about a month ago. The gi prescribed 2 canasa suppositories a day as well as asacol.

Though I'm not really keen on administering them, the suppositories are working. Very well! In fact 2 days after I started my prescriptions I was symptom free. Drug reactions can happen but you're probably more likely to get the desired effect out of them rather than not.

Or you can look at it like this. Canasa has a very low systemic absorbtion rate. Very little of the drug will go anywhere but your colon.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Yes, ulcerative proctitis is UC...the "proctitis" means that it's confined to the rectum.

As for the Canasa, most people tolerate mesalamine (the active ingredient in Canasa as well as many other oral and rectal drugs used to treat UC) just fine. I really encourage you to use it, because if you don't, it's very likely your UC will spread further into your colon, and you want to avoid that at all costs!

Also remember that you'll need to keep taking Canasa...you shouldn't quit taking it once you are in remission.

Yes, it's UC...specified to where it's limited at this time.

no freaky reactions. Use them. Did the doc specify exactly how much of the rectum was involved?

When do you go for the biopsy results? I suggest you get a copy of them to keep for your records as well as for doing some research on what it all means.

Hello and welcome, the suppository isnt all that bad i take one every night. i havnt noticed anything different since ive started taking them but im guessing medicine works differently towards everyone. i would suggest laying with a pillow in-between your legs with the right leg bent in towards your chest but like i said just a suggestion. hope all turns out good for you.

     The suppositories are a cinch.  My doctor keeps pushing me to take the cort enemas.  I am sooooo inflamed in the rectum that they just ooze right on out.  He said even if it coats the rectum, it is something.  I tend to disagree.  My bleeding and urgency still have not stopped.  On 40 mgm of prednisone orally too, 6 Colazal a day, and Humira started last Wednesdayrolleyes .   Tempted to give Flagyl a shot again at this point but have to check with the doc first.  He hasn't had my stools checked for bacteria in quite awhile now.

Any reaction to Canasa  will no doubt be slow.  I cannot tolerate them but it came on slowly - symptoms kept getting worse but not horrible.  After about 10 days I had to stop them - but that is me - and there was no horrible reaction - just more bleeding and mucous.

Give them a try - I also have proctitis and have been able to mostly control it with rectal meds - now Cortifoam and Anusol suppositories! By the way, many put them in lying on their side as prescribed.  I cannot reach that way so do it on the toilet and have no problems.

Thank you all so much for the help and warm welcome.  It really means a lot to me.

I'm not sure if the doctor's office is going to call me about the biopsies, or talk to me about them when I go back in.  He said he wanted to see me in two weeks.  So that would be two weeks from last Friday.  I will definitely be taking notes and asking a lot of questions.  They did give me a packet of papers with pictures of my colonoscopy and endoscopy with notes under each picture.

I will use the suppository tonight.  It's nice to know that no one had any immediate negative reaction.

After worrying about what was going on with me, I am relieved to know that I don't have colon cancer.  However, I think I'm falling into somewhat of a depression.  It started before the colonoscopy since I was having so many awful symptoms.  If I'm way too active I'm almost bedridden the next day.  I've been diagnosed with bursitis in my right hip, but I have pain in other major joints as well.  With the bathroom issues and the pain, it just seems like too much for me.  I know that's not realistic.  My mother chooses to be my pep squad, but she really doesn't understand.  My husband is more than understanding (as much as he can).
