I had a slip disc had to take Advil, can I take my mesalamine Apriso?Quincy Question for you

Has anyone started taking Apriso? i had to take an anti flammatory for my slipped disc, can I go ahead and take my medication as well?

Quincy, do you know if the medication start to work, can your body produce more mucus in repairing itself? When I started taking this med, I would have a lot of mucus (pinkish in color coming out but no stool, just liquid mucus)

Thanks I noticed when taking two, I'm working my way up to 4 as prescribed, I have indigestion problem, and bad gas. Did you ever get this and did it go away? Thank you

I was told not to take NSAID's with Lialda b/c not only are they bad for UC but Lialda can have a side-effect of causing bleeding as can NSAID's.  Lialda is not asprin based but apparently has some similar chemical make-up to asprin.  I do not know about Apriso though - I would call your doctor and ask.

I use probiotics, and Advil is what I used today for my inflammation of my slipped disc in my back.

I'm taking antibiotics much better, compared to before, so I thought I would try again. What UC oral drug is not a 5ASA please?

Yeah, advil or Aleve...not good. I have permission from my doc to take aspirin...but promised to never ever again take advil. I took it for periods, once a month, but after my hysterectomy...didn't need it, thankfully!

Maybe for your slipped disc you could take Robaxacet? It has a muscle relaxant in it....plus wear a support around your torso.

The only oral non-5ASA meds is Entocort which is a steroid. As well, there are rectal steroids.

But, the other option could be sulfasalazine? it does have a 5ASA, but maybe the sulfa in it would be of assistance for your joint pain and back since it seems to have antiinflammatory properties.

This should scare you. Warning for Motrin(Ibuprofin the same as advil):

Gastrointestinal Effects - Risk of Ulceration, Bleeding, and Perforation

NSAIDs, including MOTRIN tablets, can cause serious gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events including inflammation, bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach, small intestine, or large intestine, which can be fatal. These serious adverse events can occur at any time, with or without warning symptoms, in patients treated with NSAIDs. Only one in five patients, who develop a serious upper GI adverse event on NSAID therapy, is symptomatic. Upper GI ulcers, gross bleeding, or perforation caused by NSAIDs occur in approximately 1% of patients treated for 3-6 months, and in about 2-4% of patients treated for one year. These trends continue with longer duration of use, increasing the likelihood of developing a serious GI event at some time during the course of therapy. However, even short-term therapy is not without risk. NSAIDs should be prescribed with extreme caution in those with a prior history of ulcer disease or gastrointestinal bleeding. Patients with a prior history of peptic ulcer disease and/or gastrointestinal bleeding who use NSAIDs have a greater than 10-fold increased risk for developing a GI bleed compared to patients treated with neither of these risk factors. Other factors that increase the risk of GI bleeding in patients treated with NSAIDs include concomitant use of oral corticosteroids or anticoagulants, longer duration of NSAID therapy, smoking, use of alcohol, older age, and poor general health status. Most spontaneous reports of fatal GI events are in elderly or debilitated patients and therefore, special care should be taken in treating this population.

Right fruitgirl....they're systemic oral meds, immunosuppressants. Different category, still UC meds.

Ibupropfen is NOT recommended for UCers...most doctors poo-poo it...seriously.

Nothing is really good for most who have AI disease....most of us have pain. Tylenol, not good for the liver, Ibuprophen not good for the kidneys. Balancing act, although I would say once in a while would be OK.

Aspirin...well, a miracle med and a menace....I seem to tolerate it very well, at least I have options.

Have you ever slipped a disc before? What are your symptoms? I have two bulging discs in my neck and I get cortisone injections to help alleviate the pain and swelling. But once in a while, even while on injections, my neck hurts a bit so I use ice to help reduce swelling. I have also been given the ok by my GI to take Celebrex for my arthritis which helps my neck as well as the rest of my body. Of course Celebrex is not usually recommended for Uc'ers either but I don't seem to have a problem with it but then again, I am in remission. Another thing that might help is Salonpas. These are otc pain killing adhesive pads. They work pretty well on pain as long as you don't have any neuropathies.

Never heard of Salonpas....but, the main ingredient is methylsalicylate...which is wintergreen. A cousin to aspirin..both being salicylates.

Again, if one is sensitive to salicylates, dont use them.

Wonder if they're in Canada? Thanks fruitgirl! seems they could be a good option rather than taking oral.

Nope, they don't bother my skin, either. And I'm the type that if I have to wear a bandaid for more than a couple of days, my skin gets icky, I guess because of the adhesive.
