Colazal/ Mesalamine Intolerance

I have been doing research on my RX options and ran across a few articles that say some people who have an intolerance to mesalamine are able to tolerate Colazal. I have tried taking Lialda and Apriso so far but had horrible reactions and my doc wants me to try Imuran next. Would Colazal be an option for me to avoid going on Imuran? Has anyone had success with this med in a similar situation?

I also found similar info for Dipentum, but from what I understand it is given to maintain remission and does not induce remission.

Do you know where your UC is located? If it's pancolitis, I really don't think that Colazal is a good option, since it mainly targets the left side and beyond, leaving the upper portion of the colon untreated. At least that's my understanding.

It is throughout my entire colon. I guess it is worth mentioning to my doc at least, because I'm really trying to avoid getting on Imuran if possible.

I can't tolerate mesalamines but seem to do somewhat ok with Colazal. However, Fruitgirl is right. If you have pancolitis, more the likely Colazal wouldn't be much help to you.

My daughter can't tolerate Mesalamines either.

I did have her try Colazal for the same reason you stated and she reacted to it pretty quickly- like within taking 1-2 pills.

Why do some dr's prescribe Imuran and some do 6-MP?
