The reason people are concerned about pitbulls is that there are many accounts of sweet, lovable pitbulls attacking children. These aren't pitbulls that are trained for fighting. These are family pets.

I don't think people are going to leave their child with the family dog if they thought there was any risk that their child would get hurt. They find out after the fact.

I agree wholeheartedly with JB.

Most people flat out DO NOT understand dogs and canine psychology. Dogs are social animals with a strong sense of hierarchy. If you do not let them know their place in your pack (which should be at the bottom) they will assume there is not one and try for dominance. Another problem with highly intelligent dogs is boredom. You can not get most herding or working dog breeds and expect them to be happy just lying around, they need a job otherwise they get bored, and bored for dogs means distructive and/or disruptive.

Also the owner should know the dogs limits. If a dog bites someone is is not suddenly or out of the blue, people are just ignorant. For example, I do not generally let people pet my herding dog mix because I KNOW she has aggression issues (mostly related to food, thanks mom for spoiling her). However around me she is generally well behaved because I let her know that her place is under mine. Note I also had to get stitches because of her due to a confrontation with my mother that became physical (she was protecting my mom, in her eyes the alpha). The owner is responsible for realizing the animal's limits.

Also, regarding the article that was linked to: there was not provaction according to the kids mom. That doesn't mean that it was out of the blue. Also, of course large breed dogs would have more fatal attacks that small breed dogs, just the fact that they are larger means they can cause more damage. Can you imagine a terrier or a cat killing someone? And again, most people get these breeds BECAUSE they think they are scary or vicious.

We have a lovely 8 year old daughter. She is a real hand full for us. She is developmentally delayed and we have seen many doctors. She has been in special speech and language programs since she was in junior kindergarten. She is also receiving physiotherapy and occupational therapy. She is now in grade 2. She was very slow in speaking. I can remember the first time she said the word “NO”. That is one of the first words most kids learn. We were on a Caribbean cruise when she was 3 years old the first time she said NO. At that time we were worried that she wasn’t speaking much. Now all she does is talk talk talk. Sometimes we wish she would just be quiet. A few days ago she asked me what GAY means. I told her it means you are happy. She told me I was wrong. She said “it is when a girl acts like a boy and a boy acts like a girl”. The things kids say.

for what specifically? she's pooing quite nicely thanks to the added metamucil in her diet. The shot was for a UTI.

REgarding the enemas, she's more interested in the activity of me doing them...all 10 seconds of it.

I have an 18 month old son, who is my light. He's a super sweet, cuddly little guy. His newest "thing" is to come up and give me a kiss, without me asking. :) He also loves to say "bye bye" and blow kisses to anyone and everyone. He also seems to learn a new word about every day; yesterday's was "Thank you."

Paul L-- that story about Alanna is priceless! Kids say the darnest! A younger cousin of mine visited recently bringing wife & 2 children, boy in 3rd grade, girl in kindergarten. These kids pick up a lot from their parents' conversations; in this case, the parents are both professionals working in science & medicine. After they had visited an exhibit of live butterflies at the natural history museum, I asked 5 yr-old Lina how close they had gotten to the critters. She replied: "One sat on Daddy, but it just wet me a little bit with its proboscis." At this rate she'll surely ace any vocabulary test the local school district sends her way! / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Hmmm, well...since you asked! I have two incredible step kids, one is Colin, 22, and the other Alison, who is 24. Both very incredible kids. I have four great nieces who are so adorable, and two great nephews who are handsome little guys, and two more (I think one girl) who will both be born in September -- yep, busy family! Our animals are a very sweet loving English Creme Retriever named Tully who is very submissive; other dogs make him roll over and pea, and one princess Cockapoo named Lacey who rules the roost; she'll give her love when she wants to! So yes, I count my blessings to have such a wonderful family surrounding me!
