Preventive Flagyl while on antibiotics for ear infection

I was diagnosed with UC 2 or 3  months ago (right after Z-pac for upper resp. infection, then amoxicillan for strep throat) and after a slight improvement was hospitalized for 5 days with terrible C Diff.  I was given a decreasing regimen of Flagyl that took 4 weeks to finish.  I was on Lialda 3/day, along with the 40mg Prednisone and Floristor 2/day and had some improvement.  A consult with a 2nd doc suggested I try 2 weeks off the Lialda to see how things were.  Stools became more normal and formed, 1-3 or 4/day and as soon as I reintroduced the Lialda, the number per day went back up to 5 or 6.

Now I am off the Lialda, still on 40mg Prednisone and Floristor, and, EEEEK, I got an ear infection.  I have been on Cefdinir (Omnicef) antibiotic for 3 days and I am petrified of getting C Diff again.

Has anyone been prescribed Flagyl to prevent a C Diff infection while on antibiotics?  Did it work?  I am so glad I found this forum!

Flagyl is primarily an amebicide (=anti-protozoan). Some members posting here have used it successfully against C.diff. -- others needed Vancomycin to get rid of it. No one should stay on Flagyl indefinitely because it can bring on peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage in the extremities). Have you looked into probiotics to counter the side effects caused by antibiotics? / Old Hat (30 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)
