Does it matter which medication you are on for UC maintenance. I am having some insurance issues and can no longer afford Apriso. I notice there are others to choose from such as Lialda...Pentasa,
Asacol etc. Any suggestions what I can take at the cheapest price for maintenance. I have exceeded my yearly prescription quota and I just want to be able to take meds without going into hock...lol

What section(s) of your colon does your UC affect?


There are also patient assistance programs for Apriso. You can go to the manufacturer's website, Salix and sign up very easily.

The cheapest medication on the market is Sulfasalazine. This is an older drug but it works for many people - however, it contains sulfa so if you are allergic to sulfa this may not be an option. Go to the resource section and take a peek at the patient assistant programs and see if you can qualify for free or reduced meds. www.needymeds.org is one website.

The suggestions you have been offered are good. I would just like to add, if you can't get any help through Patient Assistance programs (P&G, the maker of Asacol has an amazing program), you can order from Canada. I've ordered generics from there many times when I was really in a financial bind. The drugs are the same but they do take 2-3 weeks to arrive so you have to be in top of ordering early.

I just called to refill my Asacol with P&G patient assistance and was told there website is down as they aren't taking any new patients.  Tried to go to the website anyway and sure enough, it is down.
